Top half of the agitator failed to turn when washer was on, it just spun freely

I removed the fabric sofner dispenser, then removed the cap on the top of the agitator housing. I then removed the agitator retention bolt with a 3/8 drive craftsman ratchet , a craftsman half inch socket and 10 inch extension. I removed the broken pawls inside the agitator as they had crumbled from age and replaced the old items with the new items in the agitator repair kit and reassembled everything just reversing the steps.

Top agitator not moving

Incredibly easy, literally five to ten minutes. Removed Fabric Softener cup, then lid over agitator attachment bolt (no tolls needed), removed attachment bolt and top agitator, replaced dogs and re-assembled all. Works like new.

Auger failed to rotate during wash cycle

The "dogs" were worn out; I used a socket and extension to remove the auger, then replaced the thrust spacer, auger-agitator along with the repair kit.

The most common culprit which wears out is usually the cam dogs. When you hear a grinding sound with the machine under a load, it usually means the dogs are not grabbing properly. If you see that the agitator isn't rotating, you will need to replace the nylon dogs. In most cases, the old auger will likely be in good shape, so it's important to check the teeth where the cam dogs make contact before ordering the parts.

Agitator wouldnt rotate

first i used a screwdriver to remove the cap on top of the agitator then used a 7/16 socket to loosen and remove the old bushing with the dog ears in it. (must hold bottom of agitator or it will try to turn during removal of bolt that holds bushing down) Then to put new part in its just a matter of reverse order (totally easy)

Top part of agitator not working

I first removed the fabric softener dispenser by pulling up on the blue lock ring. Then I removed the agitator cap by pulling up on the top of it. Next I took a 7/16 socket and removed the bolt holding the agitator. At this time I removed the whole agitator by pulling straight up from the bottom of the agitator. I then took the old agitator kit out & replaced it with a new one. I put the agitator back together & placed it back over the shaft. Installed the 7/16 bolt, agitator cap & the dispenser, job done. The agitator is working great. This is a real easy job to do & only takes about 15 min's. The part comes with good instructions, all you need to do is follow them. PartSelect is a great place to get parts. This is the second time I have ordered parts from them on-line. Always had my parts in a couple of days.

Dog ears on agitator were worn

browsed internet for a diagram and step by step instruction. remove fabric dispenser, used screw driver to pop out agitator barrier cap, used socket wrench to remove bolt. getting the cam that holds the dog ears out was the hardest thing, and that was still easy. Popped in dog ears and replaced everything. was easier than I thought. being able to review the steps on the internet was key to me.

Upper agitator unit stopped working

Popped agitator cap with screwdriver, used socket + extension to remove assembly locking bolt. Pulled entire agiataor out and pulled off top unit. Pieces of pawls fell out so replacement pieces needed were obvious. I ordered the entire replacement pawl unit which came in 5 days (including weekend). Reassembly was pretty obvious following included diagram. Put the agitator unit back in and secured with assembly bolt. Tested by hand and my wife put in a load while thanking me profusely. Washer may not last for another 12 years, but it was worth the $20 just to not have to go shopping for a replacement yet!
