This exterior light bulb for your microwave is 40W and has a small screw-in base. To access the exterior light bulb, you will need to remove the panel on the bottom of the microwave using a Phillips screwdriver. If your exterior light bulb has not been changed before, it is probably held in place with some silicone. You will need to cut away this silicone to remove the old bulb. If you cannot access the silicone with a utility knife, it can be removed using dental floss. Once the silicone is removed, simply unscrew the old bulb, and replace it with the new one. Be sure to disconnect the power to the microwave before you begin this repair.

Answer:

Hi Christine, Thank you for the question.First unplug the appliance. There are a few tricks you can try. One way is to use an empty soda bottle. Remove the cap from the bottle and melt the threaded top a bit and screw it into the socket where the broken off stem is. The melted threads should catch the stem and allow you to unscrewed from the socket. You can also use a pair of pliers, insert the pliers into the socket and open them up so the points are firm against the sides of the stem. Next turn the pliers so they unscrew the stem from the socket.Hope this helps!

The exterior bulb has burned out. Is it possible to replace it with a dimmable led bulb instead? The halogen bulb gets too hot and isn't bright enough.

craig for model number vmh31017fb-0
April 19, 2018
Answer:

Hello Craig, thank you for your question. Unfortunately, the only bulb that is recommend and available for that unit is Light Bulb - 40W Part Number: 8206232A. This is a 40W bulb, and unless your unit has an option for different settings like hi, low, there is no way to add a dimmer bulb to the unit as the control functions wouldn't allow for that type of bulb. I hope this information helps!

I can see the switch changes positions when pushed on the display, but the light keeps on

Answer:

Hello Daniel, thank you for your question. If the light stays on, and doesn't turn off in any capacity the issue is probably with the electronic control Part Number: PS11765762. You can test the socket to be sure that isn't the issue, but most likely the board itself, which contains the light switch options, needs to be replaced. I hope this helps.

Question:

Hello, when i removed the cooktop bulb, only the bulb came out. In the process of removing the threaded metal part with needlenose pliers (dumb move in hindsight), there was a loud pop and now the microwave doesn't work at all. I'm assuming it's the main microwave fuse that needs to be replaced. Is that a logical conclusion, and if yes, do you sell that fuse? Thanks so much for your help.

Paris for model number Whirlpool WMH5320CS-5
January 18, 2019
Answer:

Hello Paris, thank you for your question. Yes, the most likely issue is the fuse, part number W10138793. If this part blows you will not have any power to the unit. When it blows you usually hear a pop noise as well. I hope this helps!

Question:

When i exchanged microwave surface (exterior) light bulb (at the bottom of microwave, over the range), the new one will not turn off, even when i cycle through all options on front control touchpad. I have Whirlpool model (new), wmh53520cs 5 and i am using 40w philips lightbulb that fits in the socket. When the old light bulb died, the light was on, and i remember some weird, laud spark before light bulb died. Is problem lightbulb, control panel, switch, something else? Thank you! M

Mark for model number WMH53520CS-5
February 12, 2018
Answer:

Hello Mark, thank you for your question. It sounds like it maybe a bulb issue. If you replaced the original bulb with something generic that fits from a hardware store they can sometimes not function properly. The correct replacement bulb number for your appliance is 8206232A. I would recommend replacing the bulb with the manufacturers recommended part. If the bulb still remains on, it could be a relay issue which means the control board would have to be replace. I hope this helps!

Question:

Exterior light bulb looks very simple in your video laying on a table. Mine is installed and the glass bulb broke off. I have tried various methods to remove the base without success such as dental floss and a utility knife. I need either easy-out or expanding angled pliers. You cannot get a straight shot at the socket. Do you have any suggestions?

Ed for model number WMH31017AS1
December 4, 2017
Answer:

Hello Ed, Thanks for your question. One other method you could attempt is to try a empty plastic soda bottle. Remove the cap from the bottle and melt the threaded top slightly, then screw it into the socket where the broken stem is. The melted threads may catch the stem and let you unscrew it. I hope this helps.

Light bult needed to be replaced
The nightmare was that this microwave is installed under the cabinet....in order to get to the light bulb I had to pull out my stove then squeeze into the space between the stove and counter....my old microwave light bult was much easier to change.....Shame on Whirlpool for making this so difficult.....must be a better way to cover the light bulb so that we do not need a screwdriver to remove the door to get to the light bulb

Blown dual element lightbulb
The hard part was trying to find the light bulb locally. The locally sold light bulbs were either too long, not dual element or not powerful enough. So I ordered the light bulb straight from PartSelect. When it came time to install the new light bulb I carefully removed the screw holding the plate in position so as not to loose it in my gas stove. I needed the mirror to line up the light bulb and screw it in. Once it was in I verified operation and closed up the plate being careful not to drop the screw into my gas stove. Problem solved.

Light bulb burned out and socket shorted out
Unplugged the microwave to de-energize the unit. Removed 1 screw and the shroud on the range hood light; removed the light bulb. Removed 4 screws from each side and the front of the metal plate on the underside of the unit. Carefully lowered the plate to expose the light socket. Noted which wire was connected to each terminal (they are color-coded), then released the spring clip connectors from the terminals. Removed the 1 screw holding the socket in place then reversed the procedure to install the replacement parts.

Glass of burned out bulb broke leaving metal part in socket in microwave hood combo
Replaced bulb by: 1 pulling plug on microwave to make sure not hot - no power; 2 used needle nose pliers with head part about same size that fit inside of socket; 3 opened pliers and held firm against broken metal part; keeping pressure of pliers against broken metal part of light bulb, slowly unscrewed the broken part from socket using firmly held opened pliers. The rest was a cinch...just screwed in new light bulb, plugged in microwave and viola - there was light once again.
