How do you install this part without bending it out of shape. Which is what I did on the first try. I have ordered a new one.
For model number PFSS6PKASS

Hi Kenneth, Thank you for the question. You will need to install the top end of the spring first and then the bottom. Hope this helps!

How do I know if I need the plastic sleeve along with the spring for the door? I’ve replaced the spring before, never noticed a sleeve, but now the spring is broken again. Do you have a picture of how they fit together?
For model number PFSF6PKXABB

Hello Beth, thank you for your question. If the sleeve( or pin) is missing of damaged, you must replace it. The spring has two vertical ends to it, one is a 90 degree angle and the other is a bit crooked before it goes up a 90 degrees. The straight 90 degree angle side should face the bottom. To install it, you need to put the top crooked side in first, pull the flap as much as you can toward the refrigerator and then install the bottom side. The spring should keep the flap flush to the door. We hope this helps

The French swing part of the door would not go back where it needed to. I had to put it back in place with my hand.
I just replaced the broken spring and the little plastic cylinder that goes over the end of one part of the spring. I placed the plastic part on first and slid it in place, then had to bed the other end of the spring a little bit to place it in the hole. But once it went in, the door worked perfectly. And I'm a 70 yr old woman. So if I can do it, anyone can.

The door flap on the french door would not reset itself to go into the upper track it would just flop around freely and jam the door from being closed.
Just opened the french door took the new plactic sleeve placed it on the upper end of the spring and then inserted into the upper hole first then with a little pressure turned the bottom end of the spring and placed it into the lower hole.

Great part, that worked as it should
Took me a bit of effort to slot this into the appropriate place. Make sure you put it in correctly. I had to remove and replace it once. No big deal, all done without tools.
