Clearing an ice jam resulted in a broken ice chute door
This is an easy repair and doesn't take hardly any time, once you can identify the electrical bridals to disconnect and the position of the new ice chute door interface point with the solenoid.

The supplied directions are complete but were quite a bit blurry. The more general dissasembly which is effectively 5 screws and two electrical bridals to remove/disconnect is straight forward. Pay particular attention to the mounting point of the ice door interface with the solenoid. I did it twice because I didn't align the door properly the first time:-)

Much too easy a job than to "call the guy."

My actuator pad was not working consistently and my ice was not dispensing. I had ice forming inside the freezer door where the ice drops down, as well as from the ice maker itself.
I called and described my problem to a local refrigerator repairman and he told me what the problem sounded like. After ordering what I thought to be the correct parts, I just followed the video provided by PartSelect, which made it quite simple. I have purchased parts from this company in the past and made repairs which have saved me a considerable amount. This is a terrific company for us single women!

Ice wouldn't eject from ice dispenser
I removed the black drip grill and unscrewed the two screws holding the faceplate in place. After unplugging the faceplate from the dispensing unit, I removed the four remaining screws; be careful, one screw is shorter than the others.

I then pulled the dispensing unit away from the freezer door and removed the ice door assembly. WARNING: Make sure that you look carefully at the alignment of the return spring BEFORE you even touch it because as soon as I started using the needle-nose pliers to remove the spring, it shot across the room! Also, look carefully at how the end of the plastic rod fits over the old solenoid; in fact, look carefully at the entire plastic rod and how it aligns with everything!

Unfortunately, the pictures in the instructions are fuzzy so you can't really see how the spring is installed and how the plastic rod fits over the solenoid.

The solenoid was easy to remove and replace. Be aware that the plunger part of the solenoid slides in and out easily, so it's easy for it to fall out of the solenoid unit and roll away.

Once I had everything back where it was supposed to be, I screwed everything back in and the ice/water dispenser worked like new. I was even able to clean off some calcium deposits inside the unit while I had it opened.

If I have to do this again, I would estimate that it would only take 15-minutes or so. It took me longer because I didn't look at the alignment of the plastic rod in relation to all of the parts---that is one of the most important steps of this operation.

Anyone who is comfortable using tools and working with small parts should be able to complete this replacement project with minimal difficulty.

Ice chute door won't close tightly
First unplug AC power from the back of the refrigerator and I then removed entire fountain bracket assy that hold by 3 screws. Pull toward with some angle to able to access to a plug of wires and then disconnect it. Pull fountain assy downward. Set it on work place, remove all screws and transfer wires, switch, ice dispenser controller unit, solenoid, spring, flapper...and then install them to a new fountain bracket. Please note that this problem is 100% relating to mechanism. To test this work: Hold Fountain bracket assy vertically, press a flapper, position "open" and make sure return spring is working properly (enough pressure) . Now, install this unit back to my refrigerator. During installing screws, check flapper that can shut tightly enough and secure all screws, check a flapper again. I got it right for the third time because I was not aware of some parts alignment.

The Ice Maker Wouldn't Dispense Ice
First we ordered a new solenoid. . . The little piece that opens and closes whenever you push the button to dispense ice. That definitely needed to be replaced, and it was easy to do. However, that didn't fix the problem, so we looked and looked at the assembly and decided that a spring was missing. We ordered the spring, and when it arrived, we found that it matched exactly one that was already on the assembly. :-) Not the problem. Thirty minutes later we figured it out,. The diagrams at part select were not helpful with this. It was a matter of figuring out how the magnetic weight fit into the assembly. That's all it was! Now we have an extra spring for the future.

Ice dispenser door won't close
It was only the door but it wouldn't come out without disassembly of the entire dispensing section; this meant removing the front section and disconnecting 2 pcs from 3 wire harnesses...much more involved than I thought. The spring and strike were fine, but when I reassembled the unit it didn't work. The key was the mechanical connection with the solenoid. It is not obvious and directions would have been helpful. BTW unlike me, flip the power off. I got a good shock from the accuator.

The water or ice does not shut off when i remove glass. Should i replace the spring?
For model number MSD2454GR
PartSelect logo
Hello John, thank you for your question. We would recommend checking the spring, the door, the actuator pad and the bar that the door pivots on. If those parts are in good working condition the issue could be with the micro switch. I hope this helps!
