The blower wheel is a squirrel cage type wheel whose purpose is to move the air through the room or appliance. The blower wheel spins on the motor shaft to blow air through the dryer drum and out through the exhaust.

Dryer making a screeching noise. Diagnosed by removing idler pulley first, then turning the motor and learning that it was the motor that was squeaking or the blower fan.
Ordered the motor with pulley and blower wheel in case the wheel did not come free from the motor. Took out the lint screen, took off the top and disconnected the wires for the door switch, took off the front. Remove the idler poi and the belt and then removed the drum. I read in other repair YouTube videos, the blow
... Read moreer wheel sometimes is so seized onto the motor axle that you have to remove the wheel by cutting it off. Yes, ours seized! Cut off the motor axle with a hacksaw and then the motor and the wheel were free. This was not an issue since I had purchased both the motor and the wheel which I recommend doing anyway. Our dryer over 25 years old and it does not have many electrical components, which I love. We removed the parts put in the new parts. Follow the wiring diagram to get the new motor hooked up. Then I replaced the drum support rollers, which were a snap and then we put it all back together. We added an extra step because we had to takeoff the back of the dryer to gain access to the blower. It turned out to be a good thing since years of lint have been trapped at the bottom of the lint chute. I cleaned everything, washed everything and put it all back together and it purrs like a kitten. Took us about 2 1/2 hours total since we are very cautious and slow as we didn’t want to break things. I am very happy with the end result and hopefully it will last another 25 years! Parts were spot on and worked perfectly. Much more economical than buying a new dryer for $750-$1000.
The wiring on the new motor is not compatible with older motor (ours is over 30 years old) so we had to clip off old connectors and wire on new ones. There was only one motor clamp (should have read description more closely). The new one was difficult to put on. This would only be a one hour job if

Then replaced drum, front cover, reattached vent to top cover. Reattached outside vent hose. Plugged dryer in and tested it. Motor replacement worked fine and fixed the problem (squealing).

Blower (fan) assembly and old model motor with different electrical connections
1 Vice grips are required to remove the fan/blower. Clamp on inside of dryer so you can remove the blower/fan assembly
Recommend 10" or larger 14" will definitely do the job

broken blower wheel
It went well, I followed the instruction video and referred back to it if any questions or difficulty. The instructor on the video was obviously very experienced and duplicating his actions exactly was very helpful, One thing I noticed that wasn't mentioned was that the thread on the wheel / motor is left handed.

Bad motor noises
I had put in a new maintenance kit a year ago and it became obvious that my motor was not as healthy as it once was. So I got a new motor, (get a new blower fan too as you may destroy the old one to get it out). Replaced the motor and the maintenance kit now the dryer is like new
Used this resource and others' advice -thank you . Make sure to disconnect power first. I had replaced the rollers and tensioner a week earlier due to squeaking, but mine was the rare one where squeaking meant motor failure, so I had to place another parts order. The dryer was 19 years old, and my blower wheel did not simply 'unscrew wi

Just be careful not to damage the bulkhead's built-in bracket that anchors the rear of the motor. I think it was a 13/16" wrench that fit the blower wheel and I forget the size for the pulley nut on the front of the motor, but I suggest a deep socket since it held well. My best advice when dealing with a motor replacement is to ensure the blower wheel wheel will separate successfully from the motor before placing your parts order should it be a stubborn removal. Good luck.
Followed the simple directions provided. Suggest dis-assembling the dryer before ordering the parts as it was then I discovered that the idler wheel was bad and the belt was cracking. The idler wheels should be replaced in pairs. When the unit is dis-assembled is an excellent opportunity to vacuum out the lint from all of the interior ar
... Read moreeas of the dryer. The new motor wiring was different from the old motor. The instructions should be more clear as the old motor wires were not marked. There were two red wires and two black wires in the motor wire harness. Since I have prior experience with motors I was be to determine which of the red and black wires were the primary power leads - someone with less experience may have a problem with this. Suggest changing one wire at a time and install the motor in the motor mount until the wires have been installed.

Dryer is hot, tumbler is turning, but no air flow. Is this the fan assembly? Thx
For model number 86980800
Hi Larry,
Thank you for your question. If there is no air circulation then I would check the blower wheel. There are some other parts that you will need to check as well to see which one is causing the issue. You will need to check the thermal fuse, the thermal cut-off, the cycling thermostat, the high limit thermostat, the thermostat heater, the belt and the heating element connection wire. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

How do you know if the blower wheel should be replaced? I turned on the dryer and put my hand on the inlet area and there was a very minute air flow. The dryer heats up, but you have to run the dryer at least twice to get the clothes dry.
For model number Medc400vw0
Hello Michelle, thank you for your question. I would recommend opening up the back of the dryer and cleaning it out really well. The blower wheel may just be clogged with lint. If that isn't the issue, we would recommend testing the thermostats, and checking to be sure the blower wheel is spinning well and not broken or cracked. I hope this helps!

My unit is very noisy, i took the back cover and duct off and noticed the blower fan is missing a fin, probably from me leaving dry wall screws in my pockets. Will a damaged fan make the unit sound noisy?
For model number wgd5000dw2
Hello Alex, thank you for inquiring. Yes, this could cause the noise. This Blower Wheel is the replacement for your model.
