Would not exit defrost mode (continual defrost)
Unplug the refrigerator. Remove face plate located in the upper back of the refrigerator compartment. Remove face place bracket on the right using nut driver. Removing these screws also frees the metal case enclosing the Defrost Timer. Pull the case away from the back of the refrigerator exposing the Defrost timer. Remove the electrical plug from the Defrost Timer. Then remove the Defrost Timer from the case by removing the two screws securing it. Reverse the procedure to install the new Defrost Timer.

Maytag Refrigerator - fridge compartment was not cooling and the freezer compartment seemed to be cooling okay
Maytag Refrigerator (new 1991): First I unplugged the refrigerator from the electrical receptacle. I then removed the front grille and used a nutdriver to remove two small screws and unplugged the defective defrost timer. I then plugged the new defrost timer in, reinstalled the two small screws, reinstalled the front grille, and finally, plugged the refrigerator into the electrical receptacle. This took less than 15 minutes to complete. Please note, you may need to manually defrost the refrigerator, at least 8-10 hours, in order for the new defrost timer to have a fresh start of a defrosted fridge.
Frigidaire Freezer (new 2005) - Replacing the Drain Pan: First I unplugged the freezer from the electrical receptacle. I then removed the four bolts holding the compressor in place using a socket and ratchet. Then I carefully pulled the compressor out of its compartment to where I could easily get to the broken drain pan. I removed the broken drain pan and installed the new drain pan. Carefully pushing the compressor back into its compartment, reinstalling the four bolts. Plugged the freezer back into the electrical receptacle. Please use caution as the compressor may be hot and being careful not to kink any of the lines connected to the compressor. This project of installing a new drain pan took me about an hour to complete. Good Luck

How can you test the defrost timer to see if it works?
For model number MTB2456AE
PartSelect logo
Hello Jerry, thank you for your question. Locate your defrost timer. It can be located behind the refrigerator's lower kickplate, in the refrigerator's control panel, or even behind the refrigerator on its back wall. Defrost timers almost always have four metallic terminals extending from the bottom. Once you have found your refrigerator's defrost timer, remove it for testing. A defrost timer is usually secured inside a refrigerator with at least one screw, but sometimes more. Remove all the screws you find and pull the timer carefully out of the refrigerator. Pull it out far enough so that you can disconnect its wires. Pull firmly on the wire's connectors to remove them. You may need to rock them back and forth a little to ease the motion. Don't worry about which way the connector comes out because there is only one way it can go back in. Use your multitester to test the timer for continuity. Set your multitester to the R X 1 scale. Place one of the tester's leads on the coommon terminal. It should be labeled "3" or "C". If none of the terminals are labeled, you can locate the common terminal by determining which terminal coincides with the white wire in the connector plug. With one multitester lead (probe) touching the common terminal, touch the other lead to the other three remaining terminals, one at a time. Testing the first pair should produce a reading of zero, or near zero, denoting continuity. The second pair may also result in a reading of zero or near zero. Testing the third pair of terminals should produce a reading of infinity. Find your refrigerator's timer switch and turn it in a clockwise motion until it clicks. Use your multitester and test the terminals again in the same manner as in the preceding paragraph. In this test, one of the pairs of terminals should produce a reading of continuity. At least one pair, but maybe two, should produce a reading of infinity. One important note to keep in mind is that a pair of terminals that demonstrated continuity in the first test should now demonstrate infinity. Likewise, a pair of terminals that demonstrated infinity in the first test should now demonstrate continuity. If the test you conduct with your defrost timer does not produce these results, then you should replace the mechaninsm. I hope this helps!

What could be the cause of the refrigerator not to cool but the freezer compartment is working.

Hi Joe, Thank you for your question. There are a couple of parts that could cause that issue. You may want to check your run capacitor, defrost timer, defrost thermostat, and your evaporator fan motor as well. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair.

Is it possible to check the run capacitor with a multimeter?
For model number CTF2125GRW
PartSelect logo
Hi Joe, Thank you for your inquiry. Yes it is. You would have to set your multimeter to the lowest setting for ohms of resistance. Then calibrate it to zero. Make sure after unplugging your capacitor you release any electrical charge. You can do this with a screwdriver that has an insulated handle. When testing your capacitor set your meter to 1000 ohms. Touch your probes to the terminals on the part. If your meter stays on 0 then your capacitor needs to be replaced. Good luck with your repair.

To replace the defrost timer, the instructions say behind the grill. Where's the grill? Is it in the freezer or refrigerator compartment?
For model number RTT1900DAE Maytag
PartSelect logo
Hi Richard, Thank you for your question. From your diagram information, it is located down below where your compressor and evaporator coils are. The grille that they might have been referring to is the grille at the very bottom of your refrigerator, sometimes called the kickplate. However if it is not there, I would suggest checking inside the control panel in your fridge. I hope that helps! Good luck with your repair.

Hi Marie, Thank you for your question. If the refrigerator is too warm, there are some parts that you will need to check to see which one is causing the issue. You will need to check the defrost timer, the defrost thermostat, the defrost heater, the relay overload kit and the compressor and relay kit. You will need to test the parts with a multi-meter. Here is a link to one of our videos on YouTube that you may use as a general reference on how to use one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWC44fHn0As. We hope this helps.
