To access the filter, you will need to depress the food pedal on the trash compactor and pull the door forward. The plate covering the filter should just lift off without the use of any tools. You will find the filter underneath where it is aligning the fan housing.

I need a new filter for my trash compactor...is the air freshener to be used with the filter or instead of?
