Dryer Door Switch Specifications

This dryer door switch is a simple on/off switch mechanism that prohibits the dryer from operating when the door is open, and operates the drum light. White in color and 6.5 inches long, this OEM switch is comprised of plastic and metal, and features the switch and three wires that comprise the part. Sold individually, this part attaches to the inside of the top end of the front panel. One end attaches to the wiring harness, the other goes through the panel to make contact with the door when the door is closed. Over time, this part can be subject to material fatigue or breakage due to frequent use or rough handling. If it breaks or is defective, you won't be able to start or stop your drying cycle, depending on the position your switch broke in. The easiest way to test this part for functionality is to test it by hand. Push on the black tab that sticks out of the front panel to make contact with your dryer door; if there is no resistance in the tab and it doesn't make a click sound, you may need to replace it.

Dryer would not turn off when door was opened!
Your video of the door switch replacement makes this job easy! My recommendation watch the video and you will have the switch replaced in a short time! My dryer was older than the dryer in the video but the principal of repair is the same! My new switch replacement fixed my dryer so when the door is opened the dryer shuts off!

Dryer spinning with door open
Installed new door switch, so, so simple. Unplug dryer, remove lint screen, undo 2 scews located at base of lint screen opening. Use flat head screw driver to pry up dryer top, once open, rest the top against the wall. Now you will see the door switch in the right hand corner at front of the dryer.Open the dryer door , remove 2 screws holding the broken switch, disconnect wire from dryer, click in the new switch, put everything back together, plug in the dryer and go! Super quick and easy, wish I had just done this months ago!!!!

Dryer switch was broken
I just followed the instruction in the video, step by step. Easy as pie. Took out the screws, raised the top, unplugged the switch, took it out, put the new one in. Then reversed the process and put it all back together. Of course, always unplug the dryer from the wall plug before you do anything. The light bulb wasn't bad and came back on when I replaced the door switch. Now I have a replacement if it goes out.

Dryer wouldn't turn on.
Noticed the door switch was loose and the light bulb inside dryer didn't stay on. Researched the problem on PartSelect. Followed the directions given: Take 2 screws out of top of lint trap. Pry top off of dryer with putty knife. Unscrew 2 screws in dryer door frame holding in old switch. Uplug and remove old switch. Plug in new switch and put screws back in. Close top of dryer. Reinsert 2 screws in lint trap. My 20 yearn old dryer works!

door switch broken, the dryer would not stop when I opened its door
There are many good youtube Kenmore/Whirlpool door switch replacement demos online. The one already done by this site )was close enough for me. I could see that the door switch on my dryer was bad (the plastic part that the door makes contact with was visibly broken, as seen from the outside) -- so I ordered a new one. You don't have to open the top fully to access the switch wiring harness -- i propped it open with a roll of duct tape, The hardest part for me was to disconnect the old switch from the harness (I used a small flat bladed screwdriver to free it). Be careful, the metal inside the opened dryer is sharp, and can cut you.

Im replacing the door switch assembly for my dryer and I know I have the right part for my model bc I confirmed it with you first. However when I removed my old switch assembly it has two wires, but this replacement part has three. Whats going on and will this change anything?
PartSelect logo
Hi Lindsay, the third wire will not make a difference. It is for the drum light and will not be in the harness. This part has been redesigned by the manufacturer to work with several different types of dryers, which is why they now include the third wire. I hope this helps!

When dryer door is opened, the dryer continues to run and light does not come on. Is it the door switch?

While checking the door switch i have a open reading is that right? If so what do i check next? I have replaced the fuse.
For model number RED4440VQ1
PartSelect logo
Hi Karen, Thank you for your question. If your door switch is reading as open, then that would mean that you have an open circuit and that the part does not have continuity. You may have to replace that part as it seems like it is malfunctioning. I would not be able to say what else it could be because I am not sure what your issue is. Good luck with your repair.

The heating element for the dry stays on when the door is open, but the dryer does not tumble when the door is closed. Could this possibly fix the problem?
For model number WED4800XQ1
PartSelect logo
Hi Bert, Thank you for your inquiry. If they dryer is not shutting off when the door is open then the door switch should fix the issue. Some other parts you will need to check as well are the internal bias thermostat, the thermal fuse, the heating element, the motor and the timer. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

I have a Whirlpool dryer, i think it's the door switch that needs to be replaced but when my husband and i test cycle and stop, we open door and smelt like a burning smell.. what could cause that?
PartSelect logo
Hello Julia, thank you for contacting us. If it is a rubber burning smell it could be the belt slipping, and may need to be replaced. If it is a burnt electrical smell it could be coming from the motor. You can do a visual inspection of the belt to determine if it is bad and needs replaced. Hope this helps!
