Dryer would not start when the "push to start" button was pushed.
Removed the cover from the back switch panel. Disconnected wires to the switch. Pressed switch "lock in place" button. Turned switch half turn clock wise to remove. Repeated step in reverse to replace switch. However, apparently the "push to start" switch was not the problem since when testing, dryer still did not start. Will be returning the switch.

The dryer would not run.
After checking the temperature safeties, I replaced the Push-To-Start switch. This did not solve my problem, so I replaced the Timer Switch assembly, which did solve my problem. Both switches are very simple to replace. Unplug the dryer, use your nut driver to remove the 6 screws holding the back control cover. For the Start switch, remove the control knob, remove the 2 screws holding it it. Unplug the wires, turn the switch housing 1/4 turn clockwise, and remove it from the opening. Reverse the process to install the new switch. For the Timer Assembly, just a bit trickier. Remove the knob, remove the 2 screws holding the assembly. Unlike the Start switch, the Timer Assembly has multiple wires. Pull the old timer assembly out, and, one-by-one, move wires from the old Assembly to the new Assembly, being sure to land them on the proper post. Once you have done this, return the Assembly to the mounting hole. A very simple repair. Even though I spent $160 chasing the problem, I still came out cheaper than calling a repairman.

Dryer would not start.
Hard part was to figure out which part was bad. Checked out all thermo OL and fuses. The start button was only thing left. To change, take off back cover. Pull off knob from front. Pull off wire connector. From the back, pull back the top locking tab and rotate switch 25 degrees. Part fits into a square hole. Reassemble.

I push the start button, and the dryer starts, but it would only run for a couple of seconds. After trying to start it several times, it wouldn't start at all until you could hear a tiny click sound from the start switch. After the tiny click sound in the start switch, i would have to hold the start switch in for the unit to run. Even then, it would shut off after a few seconds. I temporarily bypassed the thermal fuse to see if the behavior of the dryer changed, but it did the same thing. I suspect the problem is the start switch. Your thoughts?

Hi Mark, Thank you for your question. I would agree. I suggest testing your switch with a multimeter to see if that is indeed the part that is causing you your issues. You may also want to test your door switch as well. If your door switch has failed, your machine would not start at all. So that could be what is stopping your start switch from engaging. I hope that helps. Good luck with your repair!

The timer is working after i push the start button but motor does not start
For model number keys750gt0
PartSelect logo
Hello Roy, thank you for your question. This issue can be caused by a few different parts. We would recommend checking the following parts for continuity. Thermal Fuse Part Number: WP3392519, Door Switch - 3 Wire Part Number: WP3406107, and $22.83, Thermostat, Internal-Bias PartSelect Number: WP3387134. If the parts are tested and are fine, the issue would be with the motor itself. I hope this helps!

Follow-up: Replaced start switch and motor tested fine (low resistance between terminals, infinity resistance from motor frame to each terminal). With no belt switch (on this model), continuity on thermal fuse, door switch turns dryer drum light on/off, and timer replaced ... what else can i check/replace?
For model number WED5840SW0

Hello David, thank you for your question. If the unit will not start, and with all the other parts that were tested, and found to be working properly, I would recommend testing the Internal-Bias Thermostat Part Number: WP8318268. I hope this helps!

Won't Start, been reading some, what fuses are they talking about? I replaced door switch and new door latch still does not start.
For model number leq9858pw0
PartSelect logo
Hi Joe, Thank you for the question. The fuse on your model number is called the Thermal Fuse. This thermal fuse is designed for use in dryers. It is a safety mechanism that stops the flow of electricity to the heating element when a dryer overheats. When this fuse is faulty, your dryer will not start or it will not heat properly. This is a one-time fuse, meaning it cannot be re-set. It must be replaced when there is no longer continuity between the terminals. This replacement part features two 3/16 inch terminals, and is sold individually. It attaches to the blower wheel housing. Blown fuses can be caused by clogged dryer vents. We recommend checking to make sure all of the vents are clear when you perform this repair. Hope this helps!

Dryer wont start ... thermal fuse has continuity, installed new timer (still doesnt work), heard click from push start when start attempted ... start switch (wp3398094, 3 terminal) only has continuity on one side (center to side) ... noted that after multiple attempts, both sides had continuity ... reconnected switch and again heard click (on first try only) after attempting start. rotated dryer drum and tried again ... no better. attempted jumping connector, with jump from side to side. please advise if replacing push switch appears to be prime candidate (and order a push start button), or should i drive deeper to determine if motor is shorted or do i look otherwise?
For model number Whirlpool WED5840SW0 Dryer
PartSelect logo
Hello David, thank you for your question. It does sound like the push to start switch is the problem since you only had continuity on one side at first. You can test the motor before ordering so you know exactly which part to order. To test the motor, disconnect the motor's two wire leads from the wiring harness. Set your multimeter to the R x 1 setting. Touch each of the meter's probes to one terminal each. Your motor should show little resistance (a reading of zero, or close to zero). Now check the ground connection. Place one probe on the bare metal housing of the motor. Place the other probe on each terminal, one at a time. You should not receive any reading on your meter from this test. I hope this helps!
