Top loader May Tag washer with open bottom. After research I presumed it needed a new belt, or Transmission, which runs 3 pulleys under the open bottom. After tipping the washer back for inspection, saw oil splatter underneath. Removed old belt by turning largest pulley on Transmission while pulling the belt "off" the edge. Belt was aged,
... Read more Stretched and worn. Belt and all 3 pulleys were oily causing slippage. The main large Drive pulley on the Transmission shaft, has a plastic snap on grease cup at it's center. I snapped it off with screw driver. The cup was partially full of thinned old grease causing the oily mess. There's a C clip inserted in a groove on the end of the drive shaft holding the pulley on. Removed the C clip with screw driver tip and slid off the Drive pulley. The Center of the pulley contains a plastic ratchet assembly that operates the washer tub cycle to rotate and stop and repeat. The ratchet assembly falls right out, and in the end of transmission is a Thrust washer which can be pulled of easily also. I Cleaned all 3 pulleys with De-greaser and finally with Rubbing Alcohol to dry the pulley surfaces. Then cleaned and removed all grease from the plastic ratchet assembly parts and cleaned them. Then I Repacked everything including the Drive shaft with "heavier" Grease that would not break down so easy. Reassembled everything in reverse and installed on the shaft. Snapped the C clip back on to hold pulley back in place and then the Grease cup, which just snaps back in place with a push. Installed new drive belt in the same manner it was removed, only in reverse by turning the pulley, and pushing the belt "on" over the edge of the pulley. Problem fixed and washer works perfect again with Noticeably better operation through all washer cycles.

... Read mored the belt had basically melted onto the motor wheel. Watched a few videos here, determined that the motor itself was still operating fine, so i ordered a drain pump, motor wheel, and a new belt. 2 days later they arrived. The motor wheel was hard to get off. I ended up prying it off with a hammer. Then gently tapped the new one on. Replacing the drain pump was simple - use a socket wrench to unscrew the 3 bolts holding it on, disconnect the hoses, then just do the reverse to put it back. At that point, I just slipped the new belt on, made sure everything was turning smoothly and ran a small test load in the washer. It was as good as new and cost me a lot less than buying a new one or calling a repairman.
Hardest part was finding part that needed the needed repair. Searching the web for issues associated with the sound resulted in many links. Relatively easy repair. Be aware that the video on the part select video shows the water pump in a different location than the Maytag washer. My washer will start and go through the initial cycles of filling, then agitating but then all of a sudden will start to sound like its bogging out and is having a hard time running. When this starts to happen it then eventually stops, and a burning smell is present. There is also a consistent metal of metal grinding sound. Ive disconnected and washed out the pump and when i did the pulley wheel seems to grind on its metal casing which i assume is the noise i hear. My gut is telling me maybe the belt is slipping and also the drain pump is grinding on itself.. what is the answer here?

How do I remove the timer knob to remove the timer for the washer?

Thanks for your question. You will need to access the back of the timer. In the center there is a hole with a shaft. Pull out on this shaft which will let you remove the timer.

After the drying cycle the cloths are still damper then what they used to be iam thinking the belt might be the problem the washer is 10 years old and the belt has never been changed what is your thought that the problem might be the washer does run through the cycles ok

This washer is the BEST! It's about 20 years old & has NEVER had a problem.
But when it spins it's off balance, real noisy, actually moves across the floor...
I frequently have to rearrange the clothes to make it spin smoothly.

Tan motor pulley is coated with melty black gunk, i assume from belt slipping. I see new pulley only comes with motor unit, which i hope i do not need. I am thinking i can scrape off the black plastic from tan pulley, install a new belt and be done with it. Could melted plastic be part of original pulley, or more likely residue from melting belt?
