Is this spring supposed to assist the door opening so that it does not slam open?

Hello Jim, thank you for reaching out. The door latch spring that you mentioned is compatible with your model. It creates tension and engages the door latch when the door is closed. If the door spring has broken or stopped working, then your door will not open automatically when the latch is released. We hope this information is useful!
