Open the package with the new screw and it looked like the screw was wider. I tried it to see if it goes in and as long as you screw it straight in, there was no problem.

I sent for a new thumb screw and screwed it in where it belongs and now I can use my other attachments.

I had previously ordered several other gears after I found one of the worm gears stripped. After putting it all back together, the one major gear in the unit that I had not replaced because it looked fine, the bevel gear, also stripped. Learning experience: this is a unit worth several hundred dollars, so don't skimp on a $4 part. Once you work on this thing, you might as well spend a few bucks more and replace ALL the gears - even if they look like they are okay. Furthermore, if you only take 15 minutes to do this repair, as some on this site suggest, you are probably not cleaning the old grease carefully enough. Make sure you properly clean out the old grease to remove any metal from stripped gears, and use a good quality grease to re-pack the gear case.

This is a 6 Qt. made by Kitchen Aid Stand Up mixer 575. watts with 6 qt. bowl. A powerful machine. But not geared to crush Almonds. After about 2 quarts of Almond crushing to make Almond butter I heard the machine thumbing inside and turned it off immediately. Mind you, I am a 60 year old man with Maintenance Mechanic, and Machinist skills. If you listen to my instructions which aren't that hard you can do this. REMOVE THE POWER CHORD BEFORE CONTINUING. First you have to find the screws that hold the top half of the machine together. They are under the silver Kitchen Aid Stainless Steel 5/8th Band that runs around the middle of the machine. On the back of the machine is a small machine screw that when taken out removes the band. Remove the band carefully as not to bend it because it has to go back on looking pretty. Comes off easy. You will then see 4 longer 3/4 inch screws around the middle of the machine head. When you remove these screws the top half of the machine head will lift up. The top half of the machine head lifts off very easy. Throw all your screws into the top so you don't mis place them. You will see a Motor some gears on the side and a shaft that comes from the motor going into a Cast Aluminum Casing with another 4 screws 3/4 exactly the same size as the ones you took from around the top mixer casing. This is easy cause you don't have allot of different size screws only the one small one that screws on the back of the band. After these four screws are removed, again lift up the top half of the casing but this time it will be full with gear grease. Put the casing aside and using paper towels wife a little of the gear grease off the top gear. In order to turn the gear you must use the side drive gear or look around the gear you will notice in some of the gear slots will be shinny and worn. This is the Bevel Gear. There is a C locking shaft cliff that keeps the gear locked in. You must have a multiple C clip remover pliers that has different size C clips for the holes in the clip must be spread apart in order to remove the clip all the way up the shaft. NOTE:; DO NOT USE A PLYERS TO TRY AND PRY THIS CLIP OFF IT IS STRANG AND YOU MAY MAR THE STAINLESS STEEL GEAR SHAFT. You must use the gear C clip remover, I found one moderately prized for 25 dollars at the Home Depot or any large chain hard ware stores will have it. After the C clip is removed, slide the gear evenly up. If it's stuck that's only because of grease unless you mar the shaft by not listening to me. I also replace the Top Hum Bevel gear which is in the top half of the hub. Parts select has a Diagram that shows you the parts and where they are. When putting on the Bevel Gear over the shaft be sure to lower it evenly and guide it onto the worm gear. There is a small pin that sticks out in the middle of the gear make sure this lines up when setting the gear into the worm gear. The Top Bevel Gear, falls right out and you can use your figures to pull this one out and put the new one in. If you replace the Bevel gear my experience as a mechanics is to always replaces the adjacent gear as well, both will be worn. attach the C cliff the same what as taking it off except opposite. Pull the tow clip holes apart and slide it down to the shaft groove for the clip. Put everything back the way you took it off. One NOTE;.. DO NOT DO TOUGHT THE SIDE DRIVE GEAR IT IS SET IN WITH BRASE LOCKING SHIMS AND HAVE TO BE SET A CERTAIN WAY TO CLOSE. When closing make sure the Top Hub is in line with these brace shims. After screwing the hub back down do not over tighten, just snug it tight. Be sure to buy axle gear grade and replace any grease removed, this chamber must be loaded with grease. There is never too much only too little as you will wear the gears down without the proper amount. DO NOT TOUCH ANY THING THAT DOES NEED TO BE TOUCHED LIKE THE MOTOR OR DRIVE SHAFTS OR SIDE MAIN GEAR…

Took housing off, removed computer board and disconnected speed control assembly from board. Soaked plastic slide in hot water and freed up mech. Discovered a crack in plastic slide from forcing it. Ordered new assembly and installed. TIP: Keep slide clean of substances that will jam it by cleaning occasionally with water. For a complete cleaning you will have to remove it. Total of 6 easy to reach screws.

Took mixer apart and then the gear compartment. inspected components. Replaced the worn gears and re-greased the new parts. Put the gear compartment back together, tested the operation of the unit and then replaced the rest of mixer, re-tested and declared victory.

removed cover. Removed cover over gears. Used lock washer pliers to remove lock washer. Took out gears. Cleaned metal shavings from old gear and grease. Reassembled using new gear. Took about 15 minutes and saved $$ over sending mixer out for the repair.

Looked at the schematic for this model on Parts Select. Removed Aluminum band screw, removed the 4 screws that hold the top of the mixer. Lifted the top off. Removed 4 screws and lifted the gear case. Removed snap ring and took off tapered gear. Removed pin and removed worm gear. Picked out the metal, in the grease, from the old worm gear, using a magnet then inserted new worm gear and put it back together in reverse order. There was plenty of grease and didn't need to add any.

I unplugged the mixer, then I removed the Phillips screw holding the beauty ring, then removed the 4 screws that hold the motor housing together. I removed the housing top, and unscrewed the speed control switch. I marked each one of the connectors of the switch (there are 4) 1-4 then disconnected the speed sensor from the switch and the motor. Replaced the new sensor and connected that to the new speed control switch. reconnected the connectors to the terminals I took them from ( 1 - 4 ) screwed it into place. replaced the top motor housing, I screwed that back with the four screws. replaced the beauty ring and screw. plugged it in and tested it and it was like new

Remove Beaty band, one screw. Remove four screws holding top. Remove worm gear, by simply lifting it out. Removed all grease. Repacked with fresh grease. Take out gear case/ transmission bearing, clear all old grease, repack with new grease. Install into new gear case housing. Assemble, and Repack new worm gear and front and rear worm gear bearings, utilize old washers (2), and one small ball bearing washer. Rotate worn gear and bushing to spread the new grease throughout the gears. Replace top cover, four screws . Replace beauty ring, one screw. Run unit for 20 to 30 seconds, under no load to distribute the new grease. Works like a charm. 45 minutes to one hour. To complete.

You must have new bevel gear and can of food grade grease, ordered together. 1. Remove screw from back of mixer, holding the trim band; remove band. 2. Remove four screws holding the top cover. 3. Remover cover 4. Remove two screws holding the pc board and motor speed control; lift board out of the way. 5. Remove four screws holding gear cover; remove cover. 6. Remove as much gear grease as is accessible; discard. 7. Remove snap ring from vertical shaft holding bevel gear. 8. Remove horizontal shaft/gear by lifting straight up. 9. Remove bevel gear by sliding up shaft. 10. Remove cross pin holding lower gear. 11. Remove lower gear by sliding up shaft. 12. Remove vertical shaft and rotating head by tapping on top of shaft. 13. Clean all grease from gear case and on all gears (ground metal from bevel gear will be in this grease). 14. Clean all grease from inside gear cover. 15. Making certain gear case is now clean of all old grease, use putty knife to place grease in bottom of gear case. 16. Rub light coat of grease on vertical shaft and slide shaft back up into bottom housing. 17. Slide lower bearing back down vertical shaft. 18. Reinstall cross pin holding lower gear. 19. Place grease on lower gear. 20. Slide bevel gear down vertical shaft, making certain recess in underside of bevel gear lines up and sits completely over top of lower gear; when the bevel gear is fuly seated the snap ring groove will just be showing on the vertical shaft. 21. Reinstall snap ring. 22. Lightly grease shaft of both ends og horizontal shaft/gear; make certain ball bearing on front of shaft is also greased. 23. Slide ball bearing, spacer and bronze bushing on front of horizontal shaft. 24. Silde bronze bushing on opposite end of horizontal shaft (flange on bronze bushing is placed facing the gear). 25. Place assembled horizontal shaft/gear into lower gear housing. 26. Liberally grease all gears, 27. Replace gear cover, replace screws. 28. Replace pc board and motor speed control. 29. Plug mixer in and run on lowest speed for at least 10 minutes;increase speed until satisfied gears ar running smoothly. 30. Replace top cover and trim band. Bake something

Easy repair that replaced the variable speed switch. The broken switch only ran at high speed. To replace the mixer would cost at least $500. The new switch was $45 and was an easy install. I marked the four electrical leads with a Sharpie and loosened the two screws holding the switch. The repair was super easy. It was like heling an old friend recover from an illness.

I have to thank you at Partselect.com. You happen to help me help other people. Now I have several people bringing me their Kitchenaids to me instead of sending them in. I replaced two worm gears on a Kitchenaid 6 and the Hall sensor on a Kitchenaid 5. Very easy to do. Next week I have another Kitchenaid 5 to replace the motor on. Noticed worm gear was worn out, ordered the parts, it came very next day. On YouTube instructions were very easy to follow. Important point to remember,I washed the parts in water with chlorine in it. Retaking ring was tough to take out, as I did not have parrot beak plier, could not find it at Home Depot or Lows. Putting the retaining ring I used circular nut driver, to press it on the shaft to slide down by hammering it. While assembling follow the instruction step by step from the you tube. Machine works smoothly. Performing well. Thanks to part select, excellent web page, efficient delivery. I would recommend them to all.

Remove screw and nut from back of mixer head to release the silver name band. Remove the exposed four cross head screws, (two each side), and lift off the motor and gear cover. Wipe excess grease from gear wheels to expose the retaining ring clip at top of vertical gear shaft. Using small nose circlip pliers, remove retaining ring and bevel gear wheel to expose shaft pin and worm gear. Support the shaft from below and remove pin. Lift off worn worm gear wheel allowing shaft to drop down. The horizontal worm gear shaft can now be lifted out taking care to keep assembled. Carefully clean old grease from all gears and from the gear housing, (note that broken pieces of the old worm gear are in the old grease. Repack housing with fresh high performance grease recommended for worm drives. Cover new and reuseable gears with grease. Reverse the process to reassemble the unit.
