11021292012 Kenmore Washer - Instructions

Popped top cap off agitator, removed bolt, removed top agitator, replaced directional cogs, reinstalled top agitator, bolt, cap. This machine is 43 years young, it's happy again.

Popped agitator cap. Used ratchet to remove screw. Pulled off base unit. Inserted cogs into slots after removing worn and or broken cogs. Reinstalled......done!

I took the Agitator Cap Barrier out of the Top part of the agitator and than screw that holds the 2 parts together. I removed the part that holds the Cogs. I replace the Directional Cogs (dogs) into the holder, replaced the holder into the top agitator, replace the screw, put the new Agitator Cap Barrier in and it now works as good as new!! It took me 3 minutes tops!

Followed instructions on WEB site, they were very easy.

Remove top cap to access 1/2" bolt. Remove bolt and pull entire assembly up and off of shaft.Disassemble unit by taking long std. screwdriver to release 2 small locking tabs. Flip over and remove ratcheting upper assemble from larger lower piece.Now you will see the broken cams and be able to replace.Assemble in reverse order.

I looked up the issue, and found a related video on YouTube. We ordered the parts, and I was very happy with their price (about 60% less than Sears) and how quickly they arrived. ...... It should be an easy repair, but our agitator top would not separate as it should have. ...... We look it to a local shop, and they said that sometimes the plastic 'fuses' together during factory assembly. They used wire cutters to snip the fused plastic. ...... After that, the rest of the repair was easy: just take out the broken cogs, and insert the new ones, and re-assemble.

PartSelect has a training video for this repair. Remove the softener dispenser by popping it up with a flat screwdriver. Reach down inside the agitator and remove the bottom cap. Use a 7/16 socket on a six inch extension to remove the agitator bolt. At this point I recomment pulling the entire agitator assembly out for ease of disassembly and reassembly. Clean as necessary. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the cog assembly. Place the cog assembly on a flat surface and use a flat screwdriver to remove the retainer. Note the position of the cogs and replace with the new. There are two plastic clips on the lower agitator that you can snap off to make reassemble easier. Replace the agitator in the tub. If you don't have a magnetic socket, I find it's helpful to place a small piece of paper towel across the socket to hold the agitator bolt in place as you slide it back down inside the agitator for reassembly. Tighten the bolt. Replace the bottom cap and softener dispenser.pa

It was simple. Removed one bolt slid off retainer replaced cogs. Less than 15 minutes.

Took agitator apart as shown in video, changed the agitator dogs, put agitator back together. Works great.

The youtube explanation on how to repair was great, especially the instruction to lift up on the bluish plastic ring (to detach the softener dispenser), and not to tighten the bolt too much when reassembling matters.

removed the softener dispenser, gently pried off the top with screw driver, loosen nut and lift off the unit holding the cogs. On our (Kenmore, series 90) there was a small retaining ring to hold the cogs in place. Removed retaining ring (no tools), and cogs (one at a time). Replace each old cog with the new one, being careful that it's not upside down or backwards. reassemble. test. rejoice! I used a small flat head screw driver to pop off the top cap, (since mine does not have a fabric softener dispenser). My 90 series didn't have a screw or a nut holding the agitator on, instead there was a plastic shaft with a half inch square hole in the middle. I didn't have a half inch socket at the time so I used a large flat head screw driver to remove it.(lefty loosy righty tighty) Didn't take no time at all to remove the agitator and replace the directional cogs.

Pop off soap dispenser, with a flat blade screw driver remove the cap on the top of the agitator. remove the cam,then remove the retaining ring on the bottom that hold the cods in place, and replace the cods. Very easy.
