The freezer was cold but refrigerator was warm
This is a problem in the defrost cycle. It is one of three items the heater, timer or thermostat.. I removed the screws from the back side of the freezer and romoved the sheet metal from the back which exposes all the elements. Below the evaporaro coils are two small plates which cover the heating elements ( two glass tubes conected to insulated wire), You may be able to look at it and tell if they are bad. Mine was burnt and obviously gone. If you disconnect from conectors you can check for conitinuity to tell if bad. Simply remove the four screws holding these in place and install new one the same way. quite easy. I did check the thermostat for continuity and relaced it also. It simply plugs into a clip on the back wall and two power connectors. If checking themostat for continuity make sure it is cold otherwise it will be open and you won't get a good read. The timer for this model is under \neather behind the grill on the bottom. simply turn the dial and if the motor stops it is probbably good. It runs 8 hr. and then will shut off for defrost heater to come on. Do this before closing up to tell that your new heater is working. It will get red quickly. Saved a lot of money on this one Read more...

The food side of my Maytag wide by side refrigerator was 80 degrees.
Okay all you ladies out there, listen up. Yep, I am a girl and had never worked on a refrigerator before. I googled the model of frig and the problem. Finding that one of two things were probably wrong, I went to parts select and ordered both parts. Two days later they arrived. I replaced the coil and thermostat and waited one day -- the food side still did not cool down. I replaced the frost board and immediately the unit started to cool. I had called a repairman on Saturday and was told that they couldn't make an appointment until the following Friday because of a tremendous work load. I had the refrigerator running by Thursday, the day before anyone could even take a look at my refrigerator. Even though I spent $30 on a part I didn't need, I saved a bundle, the house call would of been more than $30. Read more...

evaporator coil iced solid then fan would would scrape making loud noise
First you have to pull power plug and after removing trays and door to freezer,, i removed ice maker and metal coil cover then i melted ice cake by using a space heater blowing in to freezer compartment ,, then i looked at how old part was mounted and installed my new one the same ,,, all this was done laying on my side up in freezer,,, it would have been easier if it was a top freezer rather than a bottom freezer like mine.i did all this hoping the defrost heat element was defective, any way it is back together working good. The defrost heater is similar to the burners on an electric stove. It's located just beneath the cooling coils, which are concealed behind a panel in the freezer compartment. The heater gets hot. And, because it's close to the cooling coils, any ice or frost build-up melts.

Water was dripping from the freezer into the non-frozen area, and the non-frozen area was not cooling
I first disconnected the power cord and then removed all the panels and disconnected the Defrost Heater at the quick-disconnect, and cut the wires on the Defrost Themostat. (The Defrost Thermostat had been replaced about 10 years ago when the Defrost Heater was replaced.) One of the reasons it took longer than 15 minutes was because there was a buildup of ice in the freezer section. I then soldered the wires and covered them with a plastic sleeve and wrapped them in electrical tape. After replacing all the panels and re-connecting the power cord, I restarted the refrigerator. After one week, there is no water dripping from the freezer and everything is working properly. Your diagnosis of the problem was exactly right. Thanks for the info. Read more...

defroster element and or thermostat was not working.
removed the shelves in the freezer compartment and removed the two screws holding the back panel on over the coils and simply removed the male wire plug from the female plug and pulled the wires for the heating element down thru the coils and released the spring clip holding the element in place and removed, and installed the new element and thermostat in reverse order. Very simple. Read more...
