Maytag Refrigerator Defrost Timer

PartSelect Number PS11723171
Manufacturer Part Number W10822278
The Defrost Timer (Defrost control) acts like a clock by switching on the defrost heater circuit after a predetermined amount of compressor run time. This allows the defrost circuit to clear the evaporator of ice or frost to maintain proper airflow. If this part is not working, it can lead to temperature increases in your refrigerator. If the compressor circuit fails, no cooling will take place; if the defrost circuit isn't activated, ice will quickly build up on the evaporator coils and reduce airflow and efficiency. If the timer doesn't advance or if the contacts have no continuity, the timer will need to be replaced. This part is located inside of the control housing on most models, and is approximately 3 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. This part is constructed of plastic and metal, and comes in white. It features 1 defrost timer, along with all necessary mounting hardware and installation instructions

The frost free feature of the freezer was freezing over with ice and cooling coils were being insulated with thickening frost which caused the cooling air to rise in temperature from -5 degrees to 20 degrees.
I troubleshot the problem by reading the electrical schematic and concluding the heating elements (defrost cables) were either defective or the bi-metal temp sensor was open. When closed the temp sensor completes the circuit for the current to flow through the heaters to defrost the cooling coils every 8 hours and then when the bimetal opens at 55 degrees the circuit is open and the coils are cooled because the refridgeration motor is in run mode. A timer between the motor and heater elements also was defective. The timer controls the cooling period and the defrost period. I ohmed out each part according to the spec sheet of normal resistance of parts and thus the bimetal and timer were defective. I gather a surge of some duration and amplitude affected these parts because a storm 24 hours prior to refridgerator problem had passsed through the area and the AC electrical power had oscillated several times during that event. I used hand tools to do the repair. If you are not mechanically inclined a step by step proceedure would be moot. It is a matter of disassembly and assembly paying close attention to fragile parts. Freezer is cold, Refridgerator is not as cold as it should be
Having seen this problem before in other equipment so I had an idea where to look. Problem: the automatic defrost function was not operating. Looking through openings in the back panel of the freezer compartment, you could see the evaporator coils and fins were a solid chuck of ice. There are three logical components to check. Heater element, thermostat (located just above the evaporator) and a relay on the control board (located in the fridge control panel). Checked the heater with an ohm meter -- OK. The thermostat closes the circuit at around 20 degrees and opens at around 32 degrees. Pulled out the thermostat, wiring, fan unit. Everything unplugs, unscrews, and unclips, don't cut wires. Put the whole assembly in a friends freezer for an hour or so to see if the thermostat closes -- OK. Problem had to be with the control board. Replaced control board, reprogrammed it per included instruction. Everything is working again. Read more...

Fridge and freezer didn't cool enough
I diagnosed the problem via the internet. Diagrams helped a lot. Coils were frozen over. Thawed them out overnight. Manually advanced timer and the defrost heater was operable. The defrost timer wasn't "turning" on it's own. I turned the fridge back on while I awaited the part. It worked fine for the time I had to wait. (over two weeks since I had delayed ordering the part) New timer arrived as promised. Undid 4 hex head (1/4") screws. Unplugged 4 prong connection. Plugged in new timer and replaced the 4 screws. Frigde works great. Read more...

This is the replacement façade insert for your refrigerator. It is essentially the control panel that allows you to choose between water and ice, select different types of ice, turn on the light, and lock the control panel. If your refrigerator will not dispense ice, or if you are not able to select from the above options, you may need to replace the insert. This insert is black in color and is oval shaped. Be sure to check that this insert matches the damaged insert on your refrigerator. This part is sold individually.

the touch pad cover was cracked
I ordered the cover and the face plate because I was unsure of the condition of the cover and because the face plate is stuck on the cover. The repair was very simple. Turn off power to unit. Remove the spill plate, it just pulls out. Then remove the two screws that are seen when the spill plate is pulled out. The cover slides down and comes out. Disconnect the two wires to the operator switch, they just pull off. Take two small screw drivers and gently raise the tabs that latch in the circuit board jack and pull the jack down to remove it. Remove the one screw that secures the circuit board and use a small screw driver to gently raise the tabs that hold the circuit board in place on the bottom side and remove the circuit board. Install the circuit board on the new cover and intall the holding screw. Plug in the jack that connects the circuit board to the unit. The plug in the two wires to the microswitch. Install the cover and install the two holding screws. Slide in the spill plate. Finally install the face plate, it just sticks on and is very easy because the cover is resessed where it is to be installed. In all I think it took me longer to wright this than it did to do the repair. Read more...

Electronic control panel was dead. Refr did not cool down or operate at all.
The frig. no longer cool downed or operated at all as the electronic control panel was dead. Pulled old part off and put in new part, following instructions on You Tube. However, this part did not solve the issue. I had to call a repairman. The repairman said that another part was needed also, this part costs over $400.00 but, the part was no longer available. I had to purchase a new frig. and not a happy camper to have a 6 year old frig, that a part is no longer available. Read more...

Refrigerator quit except for the light inside.
Removed the metal cover over the HV electronic board on the back of the unit. Using a flat head screwdriver I unsnapped the plastic cover and removed it. I unplugged the 5 or 6 cables from the electronic board. Bent back the plastic tabs holding the board. You might think they are going to break but they bend. I lifted the board out and replaced it with the new one. Then plugged the cables in being careful to align them first. I then applied power and the refrigerator came to life. I followed the programming instructions that came with the refrigerator. You can get those online also. The unit began to run and in a few minutes the compressor came on. The unit began cooling and life was good again! Read more...

freezer freezes but refridge is warm
refridge never cooled good, replaced termostat and circuit board, works great probably over kill but better than waiting on parts. Very easy job, drop over head control panel , remove thermo very carefully after unhooking linkage to freezer vent to fridge, be carefull not to bend linkage, you will also have to remove 2 covers that shield thermo conduit for thermo that go to back of fridge. Board is very easily replaced when sitting on table but 1 plug gave me problems trying to release the plug, {hint} move side to side instead of moving up and down . The themo stat sencing tube install is kind of trickie too , just straighten the tube totally before trying to remove or reinstall the new sencing tube, you can form it during restlall in the fridge . It was good to see that fridge cooling back down to 34 degrees on less than mid setting. YAHOOOOOO Read more...
