Maytag Dishwasher Recalled Due To Fire Hazard

June 2010 - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in cooperation with Maytag Corporation (now owned by Whirlpool Corporation) has issued a voluntary recall of 1.7 million dishwashers in the United States (including 160,000 in Canada).

Maytag Corp. has issued this recall after receiving 12 reports of electrical failure in the dishwasher heating element leading to fires. No injuries have been reported thus far but at least one fire caused extensive kitchen damage.

The recall affects several brands under the Whirlpool umbrella including Maytag, Amana, Magic Chef, Jenn-Air, Performa by Maytag, Admiral, and Crosley. All recalled dishwashers have plastic tubs and have black, white, bisque, silver or stainless steel front panels.

The faulty dishwashers were sold at department and appliance stores from February 2006 through to April 2010 and cost between $250 and $900.

CPSC advises consumers to stop using the recalled dishwashers immediately and disconnect the electrical supply by shutting off the power at the circuit panel or fuse box.

Currently, Maytag is offering two solutions for the recall. Affected consumers can choose to schedule an in-home repair free of charge to replace the hazardous part or receive a rebate of $150 or $250 towards the purchase of a new Maytag dishwasher (some restrictions apply).

For those who don't want to wait around for an in-home repair and are not looking to spend the extra money to purchase a new dishwasher, owners can choose to purchase the part themselves. The part is the heating element similar to this one, and by using your dishwasher's model number, you can search PartSelect and find the right element for you. This is not covered under Maytag's recall.

The CPSC is still interested in receiving reports of further incidents or injuries related to the products under this recall.
