General Electric and Hotpoint Dishwashers Recalled Due to Fire Hazard

August 2012 The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the General Electric Company has issued a voluntary recall of 1.3 million dishwashers in the United States (including 90,000 in Canada).

General Electric (GE) has issued this recall after 15 reports of dishwasher heating element failures, including seven reports of fires, three of which caused extensive property damage. To date, no injuries have been reported.

This recall involves GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint brand dishwashers. These dishwashers are plastic tub dishwashers with front controls. They were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel™ exterior colors and finishes.

The dishwashers were sold between March 2006 and August 2009 and cost between $350 and $850.

CPSC advises consumers to stop using the recalled dishwashers immediately and disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it.

To find out if your dishwasher is part of the recall, locate the model number and serial number of the appliance and visit GE's Recall Website or compare them against the chart below. Model and serial numbers will start with one of the following sequences:

  • Before calling, have the model and serial numbers on hand.

GE will provide a free repair to all consumers with units affected by the recall. Consumers who instead wish to replace their dishwasher with a new model can use a GE rebate of $75 for the purchase of a new GE front-control plastic tub dishwasher or a GE rebate of $100 for the purchase of a new GE front-control stainless tub dishwasher or GE Profile top control dishwasher.

For those who don't want to wait around for an in-home repair and are not looking to spend the extra money to purchase a new dishwasher, owners can choose to purchase the part themselves. The part is the heating element similar to this one, and by using your dishwasher's model number, you can search PartSelect and find the right element for you. This is not covered under General Electric's recall.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is still interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to this product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product. Please tell us about your experience with the product on SaferProducts.gov.
