General Electric Dryer Drive Belt
★★★★★
★★★★★
187 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS16542496
Manufacturer Part Number WE03X29897
This Drive Belt is 89.5" long and comes in black, featuring four ribs on the inside for a better grip. This is a long belt that wraps all the way around the dryer drum, around a tension pulley, and then around the drive motor pulley, allowing all the parts to work together, spinning the drum as the motor rotates. If the drum will not turn when the dryer is turned on the belt is likely broken. It is common for belts to stretch or become brittle over time, which is what leads to the breakage. If broken, it should be replaced; the drum simply cannot spin without this belt. Refer to your model number and user manual to check if this part is right for you. Ensure you use work gloves to protect your hands from sharp internal parts during this repair. Please note: When comparing the length of your old belt to the length of the belt as stated here, remember that a small amount of stretching and contortion may occur with belts over time for a range of different reasons. Unless your belt is drastically different in length, this belt is what you are looking for despite any small inaccuracies. You will need to remove power to your appliance, remove the main panel, and access the motor drive to slip your new belt back into place.

Dryer making grinding noises
We live in a Condominium, space is tight especially in the Utility room where the washer/dryer are located. Turned dryer breaker off at the electical panel.
Removed the top cover and front assembly w/door and front drum support, right where the unit was located. Had to gain rear access to loosen drum drive belt so undid the dryer vent hose to floor connection through a front acess hole. Moved the unit out to the breakfast nook as well as disconnecting the power cable from the wall socket. Removed the rear access panel covers and unhooked the drive belt. At the front removed the top screws off the lower cross member to allow spreading of the side covers to allow the removal of the drum. Removed drum and found the bearing bushing gone, reduced to powder.
Using the supplied instuction sheet, replaced the rear bearing assembly, replaced the drum after vacumming the whole interior and started the reassembly of the unit using the new belt and moved the unit back into place. Reconnected the power cable and dryer vent then lastly replaced the lint filter and selector knob. Closed the breaker and turned on the machine, no noise!!!
Incidently I am 78 years old. Thanks PartSelect.

Due to over loading of the dryer the drum ruined the slides and was making a bad noise due to plastic rubbing plastic
It was pretty easy. After already taking apart the dryer to install a new belt I knew exactly my plan of action. I removed the two screws that hold the top panel of the dryer to the front panel. I then removed the top panel and removed the screws that hold the front to each side panel. I than pulled the front away from the cabinet and drum. I put the new slides in place and installed a new felt strip. I put it back together and that was that. Very easy. Read more...

PartSelect Number PS17137207

This drum glide bearing is an authentic OEM replacement part that is compatible with dryers. It is white in color and made of highly durable plastic. The bearing allows the drum to rotate smoothly and dry your clothes thoroughly and evenly. It keeps the drum stable and protects it from excessive friction damage. Over time, the bearing may wear down or break due to normal aging or wear from repeated use. If the bearing is no longer able to support the drum, you will likely notice unusually loud grinding or squeaking noises from the dryer. You may also notice increased drying times due to poor drum rotation. Inspect all the bearings on your dryer, as they tend to wear down at the same time. Each drum glide bearing is sold individually.

Dryer was making increasingly loud "thumping" sound.
Parts were shipped quickly, packaged correctly, and were in original GM packages - very reassuring. BTW, your customer service is excellent.
Reviewed YouTube videos.
Patience is required, take your time, take photos of the wires and also make a written wiring chart. This was the flaw in my planning. Reference the schematics from PartsSelect to number the controls. Do NOT use masking tape to identify the wires as they will have all stuck together by the time you go to reinstall them.
Most difficult process was removing and identifying the numerous wires to the back panel. They have push connectors, but some were very difficult to remove. The people doing the "how to" videos no doubt had them partially released and that made it look easy. Examine the connectors before removing to identify how they are captured by the connector. A paper clip "tool" I made enabled me to release some of the capture lugs, but some were so tight, I had to use small needle-nose pliers to open up the lug to release the wire on the connector.
When reinstalling, re-tighten those connectors.
Replacing the parts was much easier than the wiring disconnect/reconnect process. I'm happy to report that replacing the rear bearing and the front 2 green and 2 white shim/bearings immediately and completely solved my problem. For about $150, I restored my dryer to "like-new" functionality and got a lot of satisfaction from doing it. The project took about 4 hours, which could have been reduced to 2 hours had I know about the clip release and wiring identification process. Also, make sure you thoroughly vacuum out your unit while it is disassembled. Good luck!!!

General Electric Dryer 4 Pack Roller Assembly
★★★★★

79 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS17269866
Manufacturer Part Number 4581EL2002L
This part is sold individually. The drum support roller is found in your dryer. It is used to hold the drum in place in the cabinet while letting the drum rotate on the support rollers. It is recommended that you replace both rollers at once. You may notice that this part needs to be replaced if you are experiencing a squeaking noise, which could be due to the bearing going bad. The bearing could be severely damaged if you hear a very loud thumping noise, much like you would when you are drying a pair of shoes.

General Electric Dryer Timer Knob
★★★★★

52 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS11736611
Manufacturer Part Number WE01X24552
This is a timer control knob for your dryer. The timer is the main part within dryers that is responsible for controlling when the different processes of the drying cycle occur, and it is important that the knob that controls it works properly, too. If you are having difficulty selecting the correct dryer function and mode, this knob may be broken and need to be replaced. To replace this knob, simply pull the old one away and off, and then carefully push the new one on in its place. This OEM knob is sold individually, and does not come with any other parts.

Dryer timer very hard to turn resulting in a stripped knob
My GE electric dryer timer became very difficult to turn and eventually stripped the knob. First I unplugged the dryer. Then removed the upper back panel exposing the timer. There is only one small allen screw plus built in slots holding the timer. There are many wires connected to the timer so I took a picture just in case. I removed the timer and let it hang by the wires. I then pulled one wire at a time and reattached it to the new timer. All went well and the dryer works like it was new again. The most difficult thing was replacing the small screw holding the timer. I then replaced the back panel and attached the new knob. There’s no need for a professional repair person for this problem. From start to finish was less than 30 minutes. Read more...

General Electric Dryer Front Drum Bearing
★★★★★

101 Reviews
PartSelect Number PS960316
Manufacturer Part Number WE3M26
This Front Drum Bearing (Top Bearing, Dryer Drum Front Support Bearing, Drum Support Bearing, Dryer Drum Glide Bearing) holds the drum bearing and slides for the drum to turn on. The front drum bearing attaches onto the inside of the dryer front panel. When this part fails, the drum may no longer turn freely, make odd sounds, and not dry properly due to the drum no longer sealing. This part needs to be replaced if it is broken (often due to normal wear and tear), no longer able to hold the drum bearing slide securely, or has been eroded by the drum movement. This part is about 10 inches in height and 22 inches in width, and comes in white plastic. Sold individually.

Dryer was squeeling when running.
I removed the two screws at the front above the drum opening (with the dryer door open). The top panel then lifts off. I removed the screw at each side that holds the front panel to the side panels, tilted the front panel forward, which disengages the front of the drum from the front drum glide bearing. I then lifted the front panel slightly, unhooking the bottom of the panel from the dryer base, and swung the front panel aside. I removed the existing top drum bearing guide, which was disintegrated, and snapped in the new bearing guide, with the nylon slide strips installed in the bearing guide. Next pulled out the old felt strip, and pressed the new one in place. I then put the bottom of the front panel back into the bottom of the dryer front, and while lifting the drum to asure it fit over the bearing guide, pushed the front panel back to a vertical position to mate with the side panels. I then replaced the side panel screws, replaced the top, and replaced the front top panel screws. Read more...

This rear drum bearing kit is designed for use with dryers. It supports the rear of the drum in your appliance as it tumbles your clothes during the drying cycle. If your drum will not tumble, or if it is making a lot of noise, it could be an issue with this part. This is a ball-and-socket style bearing. You will need to replace this if the bushing has worn out, or if the ball support is damaged. This kit includes one bearing, one ball shaft, one ball bearing, one ball bearing retainer, a small tube of high temperature lubricant and installation screws. Unplug your dryer before you begin this repair.

Dryer squealed like a pig and at times the drum stopped rotating
First thought the problem was a stretched drum belt or bad idler pulley. Ordered a new belt and idler assy plus spring. Replaced those items with relative ease following suggestions obtained at this site. However, problem persisted and I now suspected a bad drum bearing. Odered the bearing kit and replaced same using the following procedure.
1. Removed the cover from the back of the dryer (held in place via two phillip head screws)
2. Pushed down on the idler assy and removed the idler spring to release the drum belt.
3. Inserted flat tip screwdriver between the top panel and the dryer main body in the front of the dryer to pry the top loose from the two retaining clips.
4. used phillips screwdriver to remove the two retaining screws (one left, one right) that hold the front panel to the main body of the dryer. (about a foot down from the top of the dryer).
5. disconnected the wiring plug on the top right hand side at the top of the dryer.
6. lifted the front panel slightly removing it from the main body and placed it to the side.
7. lifted the rear of the drum to release it from the bearing bracket and removed the drum belt.
8. Pulled the drum through the front of the dryer body and moved it to an open work area.
9. Reached into the Dryer and loosened the two
bearing bracket screws with a nut driver. Here's where another pair of hands would have come in handy. Holding the ground bar on the back of the drum with on hand, reached into the dryer and finished removing the bracket screws somehow managing not to drop the tiny grounding ball (size of a BB) Removed the badly damaged plastic bracket, grounding bar, and grounding ball and set
them aside to be discarded later.
10. Used impact driver with phillips attachment to remove two of the three screws that hold the bearing to the back of the drum (these are on the inside) The third screw's head stripped out and I had a very difficult time removing it. Had it not been for that, the job would have taken less than an hour.
11. I had my wife hold the bearing in place while I started the three retaining screws.
12. My wife also got behing the dryer and held the grounding bar in place while I installed the new bearing bracket . (this kept me from loosing the grounding ball)
I just reversed the rest of the procedures to install the drum belt, drum, front panel, etc.
The dryer works like new now, doesn't squeal.
Also replaced the on/off switch knob (just pulled the old one from the stem and slid the new one on.

General Electric Dryer Troubleshooting

Dyer issues are not as complicated as they might seem, we are here to walk you through the troubleshooting process for GE dryers. We outline where you need to start when you experience these common problems. A few simple checks, and some DIY fixes and your GE dryer will be as good as new.

Noisy GE Dryer – Determining what sound your GE dryer is making is the first step in solving the problem. Moving parts inside your dryer will wear out over time and when they are at the end of their lifespan, they may start making noise. Some common GE dryer noises are squeaking, thumping or banging, and grinding. If you hear squeaking you should be inspecting the idler pulley, and the drum bearings or rollers. If you hear grinding, you should be taking a look at the drum glides and seals. The most common parts to cause noise-related problems in your GE dryer are the drive belt and pulley, the drum rollers and bearing, and the blower wheel.

GE Dryer Will Not Start – Two different problems fall under this symptom and the first is power failure. If your GE dryer will not turn on at all there is a chance there is an electronics problem or power failure. Start by ruling out power failure. To do so you’ll want to inspect and test the power cord, outlet, breaker, and fuses that are linked to the dryer. If you are not dealing with a power failure but rather a dryer that turns on but will not start a cycle you should start by looking at the door switch. If it is faulty, broken, or obstructed the appliance will not run. It is a safety feature that your GE dryer will not operate if it thinks the door is open. If you cannot identify an issue with the door switch, move to inspecting and testing the thermal fuse, start switch, timer, and thermostats.

GE Dryer Not Heating Properly – It can be frustrating if your General Electric dryer is not getting hot enough, or if it is not getting hot at all. But there is no need to worry, it could be as simple as an airflow issue. Before you inspect any other parts, we suggest you rule out airflow problems by cleaning out and checking the exhaust vents and lint screen. If that does not resolve the heating issue you should then move to the heating element, thermal fuse, power cord, or one of the thermostats.

GE Dryer Will Not Tumble – If your GE dryer is overloaded it will not have the power it needs to rotate the drum, which could cause more serious problems if the drive motor is overworked. You should start by making sure that you are not overfilling the drum of your dryer. If you have ruled out that problem, you will then want to check a few of the parts in your GE dryer. Most often a broken, damaged, or stretched drive belt will be the cause of this problem. A good way to check without opening the appliance is spinning the drum with your hand, if there is no resistance at all and it rotates too freely that is a sign it is the drive belt. If you rule that it there is a chance you have a faulty motor, and you will want to test that part.
