The dial under the knob that selects the washer settings stopped turning with the knob after just a few weeks
I had our reliable handyman take a stab at it after he determined what the issue was, and after we'd already tried a new knob and a new clip. Here's what he described as the issue: "Bottom line :the gears are to weak to take any force and break off. They need to be made of a strong metal not plastic. I also believe that the timer gear was binding and put more force on the gears." Read more...

Washer would not run. Lights on but would not run at all.
Figured out it was the control board since lights were on when I plugged the washer in but the washer never started. Pushing the ON button would flash the fill light but nothing happened. The part came in less than a week. I did notice the part came with the control panel for the water fill, water temp and options as they are wired together. The part also had the plastic holder which has the ON button pusher which I was happy about since mine had broken several months back. One note, the part did not have the jumper connector (the one that does not have wires going anywhere except itself. This was not a problem since I just used the one from the old part. Repair took about 10 minutes (I had already figured out how to remove the part to make sure I could before ordering the part). Was not hard. Put in the part and noticed the washer filled with water but stopped and never started the wash cycle. I knew something was wrong because, when the lid is closed it should spin the drum during fill up. It was not. I reconnected all the wires on the control board and it now works fine. Read more...

Washer would not wash on "normal" cycle. Had to play with the knob to get it to run at all. Washer would not drain properly either.
I unplugged the washer from the electrical outlet.

I then removed the drain hose from the wall drain to allow me to turn the washer to gain access to the the back panel.

From the front, I then removed the plastic timer knob from the timer by unscrewing it. Then I pulled the plastic plate with the arrow on it to remove it. This exposed the screws that attached the timer to the control panel. I left them attached.

I then removed the two screws on the bottom of the front of the control panel (on each end) that attach the control panel to the washer.

I then went to the rear of the washer and removed the two screws on the top of the rear of the control panel.

I went back to the front and pulled the control panel forward and up to release it from the washer.

I then removed the two screws (that were under the plastic plate) that attached the timer to the panel and removed the timer from the panel.

Then I unplugged the wiring harness from the timer and removed the timer completely.

From there I reversed the procedure to install the new timer and knob.

Washer was operating erratically
With the symptoms (go from one cycle to next instead of stopping, wouldn't spin and drain sometimes, etc.) the only common element was the "brains"- the timer. I unplugged the washer, removed 4 screws at the top of the washer and removed the dial handle retaining clip with needle nose pliers. Then I unplugged the 1 electrical connection, and removed the timer and popped the new one in. I plugged the electrical back in, reversed the process, and washer repair was completed in less than 30 minutes. Read more...

Replace Timer Module
Remove the knob. This is the hardest part. To remove the knob, unplug the washer and pull the unit out so you can get to the back. Stand on the right side of the machine and pull the knob out. It is retained by a nylon clip. Take a small flathead screw driver and use it to push the clip up from the open ended side. Not much force is required. It will pop right up. The clip has a hook on one side so if you try to remove it with needle nose pliers (like I did the first time) you will bend the trim on the knob and likely break the clip.

Once the knob is off, remove the dial with the pointer on it and set it aside.

With this done, remove the three hex screws on the back of the control panel. Then lift the plastic control panel up, then forward. This will allow you to lay the control panel on the top of the machine.

Remove the wire harness by lifting up on the retainer and pulling on the harness. Grip the harness not the wires. The harness seats with a good grip so you'll need to work it a little.

Remove the single retaining screw that holds the timer unit to the control panel. Once the screw is removed TWIST the timer unit to remove it. The timer is held in place by two retaining "prongs" that you will break off if you try to pull the timer off the control panel. Once free of the retaining prongs, the timer is off the control panel and you are ready to replace with the new one.

Install is the reverse of what you just did.

When you get to putting the knob back on don't forget to put the dial with the arrow back on first. This only goes on one way but it takes a pretty good push to get it to seat. Next, put the nylon retaining clip on the knob such that it's barely on and slip the knob on the timer post only to the point where you see the slot in the knob and the slot on the post line up. When the two slots are aligned, use the blade of the flathead screw driver to push the nylon clip into place.

Reseat and align the control panel, replace the three screws, plug the unit back in and you can watch the game while the little lady gets back to her washing. :) Just kidding ladies.

This is an easy repair that anyone can do with only a couple hand tools and a little patience. Getting the knob off is the hardest part and a little finesse will work better than brute force.

Have fun, you can do it.

Wash Cycle would not complete (would not drain)
PROBLEM: The washing machine would not go through the entire wash cycle. It would stop at the rinse cycle and the tub would not drain.

FIX: So easy, my wife made the repair while I was out of town. (1) Remove the two (of four) inner most Philips head screws to allow the control panel to swing down. (2) Pry off the cover on the cycle select knob with a flat head screw driver to allow removal the clip that holds the dial to the timer. (3) Pull off cycle select knob, cover, and spring, (4) Remove two bolts that hold the time to the control panel. (5) Remove two electrical connections from the timer. (5) Repeat steps in reverse order to install the new timer.
