Washer would cycle only if I manually moved dial

First I removed the setting dial, then removed the 2 screws that hold the panel on. Then removed the 2 screws that held the timer in place. The new part was exactly the same. I unplugged the wires from the old one and plugged into the new one. Positioned the new timer in place and replaced the screws. I did have trouble with the screws, getting them tight enough, I could not seem to get them to tighten all the way down. So......I sprayed them with WD-40 and without a hitch they tightened up and held the timer securely in place. I was so proud of myself I could hardly stand it. I was going to wait until my husband noticed the washer was fixed to tell him I fixed it but I could not wait that long!
