Knob broke off due to age
Looked up on the internet and found the part. The Kenmore washing mahine is 20 years old. I have never had any repairs. The part came in 3 days and I merely followed the old threads on the screw and it washing machine works now!
I'm 77.

Washer's timer knob (plastic) broke off
I looked up the part description on PartSelect. I did not find a match by Kenmore model number (I guess it is really old), so I searched by type of part (knob) and other parameters such as size. There were still a couple of hundred hits, but the very first page had the most relevant match, and the excellent graphics made it easy to see the part I wanted. I was a bit concerned that the original part was white plastic, whereas the replacement was black metal, but I went ahead and ordered anyway. I was a bit put off by the prce i.e. a simple knob costing $20+ is a bit of a rip off, but unfortunately, there is no alternative to find an exact replacement part (the alternative is to buy a new washer for $1000+).
Once I ordered, everything went very smoothly. The part arrived very prompty (I ordered on a Sat, and part arrived on Wed) and it took less than 5 minutes to unpack it and twist it on the washer. And now it works great! I am glad it is metal so won't break off (even though aesthetically, it is not as pretty, being black on a white washer).
Overall, excellent experience at PartSelect. They have a great selection of parts, detailed descriptions/graphics/reviews and excellent service.

The timer/wash select knob broke off in my hand
Went on line and did a search for Kenmore Washer Select Knobs through the Part Select website. The associated photo made it easy to match to my broken part. Ordered it and received it in 3 DAYS!!! Unwrapped the new part and screwed it on (the knob is threaded)- took longer to unwrap the part than to install it!!! I Love PartSelect.com!!! This was the 2nd time I have used them and will continue to rely on them whenever possible for my appliance repair needs!!!

Agitator noisy and not agitating wash
First I replaced the broken plastic control knob with the better die cast knob.
Pried the cap from the top of agitator assembly ..after first removing the softener dispenser.
Used socket with extender to remove visible retaining bolt. Pulled out plastic column and old dog bone ratchet assembly. Removed and replaced bottom spacer ( this had busted tabs and caused noise during agitation), greased all appropriate points with silicon grease..lithium would have been better...ordered wrong agitator so put old undamaged one back with new dogs which fit. Snugged down bolt..runs like new machine again.

Timer knob broke
I looked up the part number--within two days the new part came by FED-EX. I simply screwed the new part in place and BINGO--- saved a service call and washer is working fine.

Old knob broke off
I was happy to find this place. Sears was out of stock on this part. PartSelect was $5 cheaper than Sears and sent it the next day.
Part is better, inside is metal not plastic, won't break again.
Screwed off remains of broken plastic and screwed on new knob. Easy as pie!

Plastic timer knob broke off
simply screwed the new timer knob (which was metal instead of plastic, thank goodness) on the screw left when the knob broke. Easiest and cheapest repair I have ever made, and saved me from buying a new washer.

Washer wouldn't spin
You diagnosed the problem correctly, I ordered the parts, they arrived in two days, and if I had removed the cabinet as I found out I should have, after the fact, it would have been easy. My biggest problem was in the process to remove the cabinet to access the part. I should have read how to do that prior to starting. All is well now.

Couldn't select the washing time
I had already disassembled the part. All I had to do was thread the new part. My wife thinks I'm a genius. I guess I am, I ordered the right part and it was delivered in a timely manner.

The repair was very simple. Just screwed the new timber knob on.
I ordered the part on Tuesday. When I got home from work on Wednesday, there was the part. The order was placed for standard delivery. I've never hard a part delivered so soon. Thank, my wife was happy to have her washing machine down for just one day.

Knob broke off - wear and tear I assume - plastic
I guess I was real lucky - did not need any tools. Where the knob broke off it left a small piece still screwed on the post. I unscrewed the piece and screwed on the new knob and it was done. This knob has the middle (screw on) made of metal. It should last longer if not forever. :-)
