Start and then kick out.
Two Phillips screws, and 2 5/16 bolts and the dryer is open for this repair. Remove the drum and note the placement of the drive belt. Then using a pipe wrench grab the rear plastic fan housing, at the rear of the motor shaft, and turn the front of the motor shaft CLOCKWISE. If the Fan is ceased (as it was in my case) you will need to use locking vice grips (at least 3 or 4 between the fan blades to stop the fan blades from turning on the rear shaft.) while your turning the front of the motor's shaft. If done properly, you should have about 25-30 turns before the motor is free for replacement. Once this is accomplished, mounting the new motor back into the dryer is a simple matter of reversing your steps. But keep note of the belt placement and the motor wiring placement before starting.

Dryer would turn on and imediately stop
Shut off gas and unplug dryer. Disconnect gas. Take back pannel off by removing a bunch of screws. Take lint trap apart few more screws here. Remove top of dryer (pop the plastic cllips), and front door/panel. Vacume all areas (tons of lint everywhere). Pull out tumbler. Change support wheels. Take off blower fan by using an adjustable wrench and 1/2 " wrench. hold fan with adjustable wrench and turn drive shaft clockwise. Then remove motor. Replace with new motor and reverse the process.

Motor making strange noise
I removed the back before I relized that the motor was under the drum. I removed the front and the drum and accessed the motor. I used a small flat head screw driver to prythe brackets that held th motor in place. I had a bit of a problem removing the motor from the fan. Then I read the web site and figured out that the treading was a LEFT thread. Still had some problems and ended up removing the pully wheel and using a pipe wrench to get the fan off the motor.
I wish I had taken a picture of the pully and belt to see how it went back together, but it went back easy enough.
Very pleased with my effort and guess I saved about $300 bucks on the repair, and the 2 plus weeks to get the guy to my house.

Dryer stopped and smelled of smoke.
I reviewed several videos on parts sites and YouTube. There is more than enough advice online showing step-by-step instructions. The only difficulty came with the rear nut holding the motor shaft to the blower fan. I used a crescent wrench with a long pipe over it for added torque. The two spring clips holding the motor in place can be removed and installed with the help of a nutdriver pushing the clip down, . The dryer was new enough so the motor needed no switch changes. The new motor is running fine.

Dryer stopped working.
I followed the on-line video. I am extremely happy I made the effort and successfully fixed my dryer on my own. It sure beats a new dryer expense or high repair cost.

Heat output and tumbling action ceased working after approximately 20-30 minutes of use.
Removed and replaced motor. In the process of removing old motor, the blower wheel had to be unscrewed from the rear shaft of the motor, in order to remove the motor. In my case, the blower wheel had seized up on the rear shaft and could not be unscrewed. It had to be cut off and it also had to be replaced. The dryer now works fine. Tip: I watched an internet video (repairclinic.com)about the procedure before I started. Very helpful!

Dryer drum not turning and no air circulating
replaced motor and drum rear seal as well as idler wheels, the old rear drum seal was completly worn out, since I had it all apart, I replaced lint chute and trap seals and belt and tensioner. I spent less money on parts than if I would have bought a new dryer. The motor was the main problem as the bearings were shot.

Dryer made loud rumbling noise and then shut down
It had been making noise for a week and I bought the two drum support rollers hoping that was the problem. It wasn't as the dryer started shutting down after a few minutes of running. I opened the top of the dryer and removed the 2 screws holding the face and door on. I removed the face and disconnected the door switch wires and released the drum belt by pushing on the idler pully. I then removed the drum straight out the top. I then put a wrench on the fan on the back of the motor and unscrewed it and then released the two holdown clamps on the motor and removed the motor. I had to make a couple of wiring modifications for the new motor but the instructions and connectors that came with the motor were perfect. I put everything back together and plugged the dryer back in and tried to start it and .... Nothing. I forgot to reconnect the door switch wires. Fixed that and the dryer now runs as good as new and makes no noise at all now (almost anyway). It should be good for another 10 years easy.

Motor conked out, similar to other stories
My dryer is probably more than 20 years old. I know, I know, but I decided to fix it anyway. I followed the same steps as the other posters here. However, I almost never fix anything like this and the dryer is in a small space with only a couple of inches of clearance on either side. The repair took 10 hours off and on over 2 days. You will definitely need another set of hands at various times like when you are unscrewing the fan from the motor shaft and when you are reinstalling the drum and belt. Getting the motor mount clips off the frame was a huge pain and getting the motor back in place and the clips on correctly was a 3 hour learning experience. Make sure you have all the wires hooked back up BEFORE you hook up the motor mount clips. When you seat the motor on the mounts the wiring hookups need to be almost on the bottom. Check the instructions drawing for placement. You don’t actually remove the fan cover you just unscrew the mounting screws and push it to the side. Re-hooking up the belt and belt tightener is not intuitive but you will eventually figure it out. I found some generic dryer belt installation drawings on the Internet that showed me how to do it. The photocopied instructions that come with the motor are kind of fuzzy after a few generations of photocopying. In the end, it worked! It is also much quieter now.

Noisy, belabored starting, and dryer quit prematurely
Very simple repair and a WHOLE lot less expensive than paying someone else or buying a new dryer. I had to remove two screws under the lint screen lid and roughly 15 hex-head screws from back panel and lint chute. I popped the top open, removed the back panel, and removed the lint chute in back. Then, remove two screws and one quick-connect electric plug holding the dryer door panel to the rest of the box, one on each side at the top. Then lift the front panel off and pull dryer drum out the front of the box. Hold the motor shaft with a wrench and turn the fan wheel in back clockwise by hand to disconnect the fan from the motor. Remove two clips and electrical plug holding motor in place and wiggle the motor out of its rest. The drum belt and thermal switch are self-explanatory. Installation is the exact reverse. Very quick and very easy. Dryer works almost as good as new. It would be good as new if I replaced the drum seals and possibly the drum wheels, but they just didn't look that bad. If your dryer has trouble starting, quits before the cycle is over and clothes are dry, and sounds like the motor is labored, this is the fix and is very easy and affordable.

Replace motor in dryer
Repair went well your video was a great help. The motor was hard to disconnect from the blower and fan side. The shaft that you hold with the adjustable plier was hard plastic type of material and wanted to keep slipping and the edges wanted to round off and not hold in the adjustable pliers. I had to use a small pipe wrench with teeth to break it loose. The only other problem was the ground screw in the new motor had an odd type of head on it and took a special type of nutdriver attachment to loosen it and attach the ground wire to the new motor.
