The tub dampening straps support the wash tub and reduce vibration by keeping the tub at the center of the cabinet. If your washer shakes and moves, or is making a loud banging noise during the wash cycle, the washing machine tub could be off-balance, meaning one or more of these straps may be loose, or broken. Other symptoms include: the washer leaking, refusing to agitate, or pumping but not spinning. These straps are sold individually. However, we recommend that you replace all 4 straps at the same time. It is also recommended that you check the tub for cracks where these straps mount.

This part works with the following brands: General Electric, Hotpoint.

This part works with the following products: Washer.

This part fixes the following symptoms:

  • Shakes and moves.
  • Noisy.
  • Leaking.
  • Pumps but will not spin.

The dampening straps in my washer keep breaking earlier than they should be and I don’t think it has to do with the way I am installing them. Can you clarify whether this would be an installation problem or if there’s something else on the go here

Gina
Answer:

Hi Gina, dampening straps break prematurely when the washer is being overloaded, or is frequently off balance during cycle. I hope this helps!

Question:

When my washer is agitating it’s making a moaning noise like it’s suffering or something. When its filling up with water or draining it doesn’t seem to make that noise. Could the washer tub need new dampening straps

Rema
Answer:

Hi Rema, based on your symptoms we would not recommend new dampening straps. It sounds more like it could be a motor straining, or a faulty mode shifter. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Tub straps broken caused excessive wabbling

Popped off the front panel and removed two screws that help top down. Then pulled the top of the washer up and leaned back out of way. Then each strap had a screw on each end and a clip that holds straps just remove the old and replace with new and put back together.

Very noisy in spin

When disassembling I could not remove the 1 3/4" tub nut with in house tools and had to order the spanner wrench. Almost mandatory unless you have a socket wrench.

Noisy washing machine, tub bangs around

The picture of how to depress the clips to remove the front was incorrect. The clips are 4" from the sides not immediately at the sides per the picture. The 4 rubber springs were only part of what was needed for the washer. The old gas dryer was still working. There are two more springs on the bottom of the tub missing not shown on diagrams, so it still sways side to side, bangs around and makes a lot of noise. After putting on the 4 rubber springs, it ran, but probably needed a new clutch also, because it wouldn't spin dry anymore. I ended up spending $2000 for new washer and dryer from Maytag, and throwing out these old machines today.

Two out of four straps were torn

First I found out on the web how to open the washer's front cover.
For the strap in the front, it's relatively easy to replace a strep if your hands are somewhat flexible.
For the one in the back, I also needed to open the top dial panel, in order to lift the main lid connected to it, in order to then be able to reach one of the screws of the back strap. the other one of its screws I was able to reach from the front with a ratchet and extension from the front. Arms do get heavy from time to time, but overall it was manageable.

Tub dampening straps needed for repair

Check on internet on how to use a putty knife to remove the front panel (slip it into the crack between the top lid and front panel). Then you can see the straps that are broke, figure out which screws to remove to gently lift the top lid to get at the pieces holding the straps in. Pretty simple, just remember to unplug the machine before starting.

The washer was making noise.

Removed the front cover with a screwdriver, by locating and slightly prying the metal clpis back to release the cover. Then I removed one screw (only one visible) from the strap that hold the top cover/lid down. With a little prying, I lifted the lid up out of the way, and suspended it with a cord. I removed the old dampener straps and replaced each one at a time with the new strap. It was not to hard to get to the screws (I have large arms), and it only took me nearly a half hour to complete the task. It would have been easier if I used two different size nutdrivers, but it was easy enough with an adjustable wrench. Then simply put everything back to together in reverse order of how I took it apart. The wife was impress that I fixed another thing around the house.

Noisey,out-of-balance spin cycle

Removed the two hex head screws from the broken strap and replaced it with the new one. The other three straps were not broken but I also replaced them, again, one at a time. This made sense, since the machine was at least ten years old.

Washing machine flooding

The after school director told me of the washing machine flooding. It took only a bit to find the hose that was leaking--a little longer to figure out where it went. It was the bleach line to the drum from the little bowl under the lid. It had pulled off.

I noticed that three of the four tub dampening straps (little rubber bungees) were broken. PartsSelect had a good exploded view of the washer that helped me locate the correct part and order it. They were shipped quickly.

Start with the machine empty of water and unplugged.

The front of the washer pops off (most have a removable top but this GE did the front instead). This exposes two screws to remove in order to lift and remove the top, exposing the tub. While you lift the lid, you have to remove the bleach line from the pocket at the front of the machine. It helped to unplug the machine and remove the lid switch to make access easier. It has two screws holding the assembly to the lid.

The straps are on the four corners of the tub, attached by hex-head screws. The two in the back aren't as easy to access. A stubby nutdriver would have helped for the screws that were upside down holding the straps to the frame. The straps were replaced and all the parts put back.

The washer is quieter and shakes much less. It was ready for the Christmas dinner washing later in the week.
