Fingernails had pierced through the plastic covering on control panel
Having learned from my father (who died in 1994) how to "fix" lots of things, I simply (ha) took the control panel off. I needed an extra set of hands about 1/2 way into the removal. My husband helped hold things in place until we removed the old panel. Putting things back the way you take them apart is a very necessary thing, so we carefully removed the plugs from the circuit board and then replaced the old control panel with a new one. It was not complicated, just time consuming. We looked up and said "Thank you, Melvin" (my father). $40 is a lot less expensive than a new dishwasher and all the problem consisted of was a cosmetic issue. The dishwasher now looks brand new.
