Living overseas and caring for a dinosaur dryer
My friend Saeed did the repair (which was really maintenance) for me. What I really want to communicate is how WONDERFUL it is to use PartSelect for folks like us living overseas and keeping alive an ancient gas dryer (not available in Morocco and infinitely cheaper than electric). We don't have a local Maytag parts dealer, so we feel lucky to have this option of using the diagrams to order exactly what we need to keep our economical and efficient gas dryer going.

Dryer loud thumping noise.
Problem was the blower wheel, (Plastic deteriorated). Replaced the tumbler and motor belt as well as th idler pulley. While the blower wheel turned out to be the problem, the other parts were significantly deteriorated. Since I had the dryer disassembled it made sense to replace the other parts. The 24 year old dryer runs like new. The parts select instructional videos were extremely helpful.

Loud noise
The actual promlem was the blower fan blade I also replaced the belt and other moving parts just because ! The only thing needed to do from the back is remove the 4 screws holding a metal plate on the lower right to gain access to the belt tensioner. EVERYTHING else is done from the front Don't learn the hard way (I did). Part Select was wonderful.

Dryer belt broke
Dryer didn't come with good instructions. Online to get instructions I found Parts Select. We have an appliance parts store 30 miles away who had the belt but it was $18 more plus the gasoline cost for the 60 mile round trip. We ordered the belt from Parts Select and received it the next day by Fed Ex. I received an instruction page with the belt that was exact in every detail to the installation process. I now have Parts Select in my browser for quick access and with use them every time I have an appliance problem.

Loud squeak while running, mostly at the beginning of run.
Unplug dryer, many exposed wires inside. Replace rollers, remember to order two, since there is one on each side for drum support. Use small amount of a good long term oil to help give the drum rollers added friction release. The belt was replaced since it was worn and the added cost is minimal compared to the repair. The shafts were actually in good shape, but since I ordered one I did install it. Be sure to clean up the shafts if left unreplaced since they will be dirty from priro use. The inside of dryer has various sharp edges so I recommend wearing protective gloves to prevent a nasty surface cut.

Belt cracked and worn ready to break
Amazingly easy. I was worried that I would not be able to find the part because the dryer is so old. I was amazed when I find this website and it had the exploded diagrams which made finding the part super easy.

When the dryer grumbles check the blower wheel too.
If your dryer is making a rumbling noise, change the blower wheel. It's plastic and the heating and cooling cycles causes the keyway in the plastic to give out and the wheel just spins causing the noise and the slower dry time. The other parts I replaced see below. Like many other repairs, remove screws below dryer door. Mark all wires and locations for re-assembly. Next remove front tumbler/lint screen assembly (4 sheet metal screws 2/L 2/R. Work belt off back of tumbler and remove. Use flathead screw driver to release tabs that hold felts on both front and back tumble supports. Make sure you know rotation of tumbler and install new felts so the overlap goes in direction of spin. Use a drum stick or 3/8 ratchet extension, something dull and flat to press tabs back down on felts. A screwdriver could slip off and tear cloth. Next drill out heads of the rivets on the glides and remove teflon glide and cork backer. Make sure all rivet material is removed front and back. Install new cork and glide. Rivet one side back in, then the other. Repeat on 2nd glide. Re-assemble dryer. Super smooth, super quiet.

Belt had broken and drum wouldn't rotate.
Followed the instructions and printed out the diagram of belt rotation from your website. This was my first attempt at repairing a dryer-should take less time with future repairs. The inside of dryer need cleaning as it is over 20 years old.

Worn belt, torn filter, lint cleaning
Firstly, and I can't emphasize this enough; I went on Utube and found a video as to how to do the belt replacement on this exact Model. Then with the help of my wife, we just proceed step by step. We took digital photos of the electrical hook-up to be sure to reassemble to electrical correctly; as well as the capstan/idler belt threading. Getting the new belt on to the drive capstan was the hardest part. I loop it over the drum while it was pulled out about 6". I then reached through the drum to tread it around the capstan/idler. Then I moved the drum into place, and SLOWLY wound the drum by hand CW 2 turns, to give the capstan a chance to do the final alignment of the belt/drum. No problemo!

Rumbling / groaning noise when dryer starts
I thought the noise was coming from the rear belt / pulley system, but found it was from the front blower wheel.
First phase: disassemble to figure out problem -- found the front glides were worn and tumbler belt was old & cracked and noise was from blower wheel. Vacuumed out tons of lint. Ordered parts. Had to order rivet tool & ring pliers (tools cost $25 including shipping). One hour.
Final phase: Disassemble & drill out glide rivets -- attach with new rivets (easy). Replaced blower wheel & belt (easy). One hour.
Runs great -- no noise. Cleaning helped drying ability. Videos were key. ALWAYS REMEMBER TO UNPLUG! I didn't & nearly welded my fingers to the chassis.
