Squealing noise until the dryer warms up

The PartSelect video for the procedure is for the Whirlpool branded version of this dryer. The internal parts and construction are identical, however, the initial steps for opening up the dryer are different. On the Amana the top also tilts up, but is held down by two bolts, and not just the spring clips. Steps are: a) Remove bottom kick plate which is held in by two bolts on the lower front edge. b) remove the retention bolts that are now exposed on the front panel and remove the front panel by pulling it down from the top spring clips. c) Unbolt and remove the front drum retention panel. d) The two bolts that hold down the top can now be removed and the top panel tilted up so the drum can be lifted out after the belt is loosened. The whole process is very quick and easy. Only tricky part is fumbling around behind the motor to move the tensioning roller and arm to remove and re-install the belt. Also, I had cheap spring clip pliers so I was fumbling with the spring clips that hold the rollers on their shafts.

... Read morehe rear of the drum. remove wheels. One of the shaft pieces that holds the wheel was shot so I replaced that (2 screws). Put new wheels back on. This was actually fairly hard. the new shaft seemed to have a larger receiving end. with hammer and lube I eventually got it on. Re-assemble in reverse order. took about 20 minutes. the only special tool was snap ring pliers (could easily get snap rings off with a flat screw driver.
I removed lower panel and front of Dryer. I also removed Drum bracket and pulled drum slightly out. I was able to acess drum roller without taking drum completly out. I removed drum roller and roller bracket. Re-installed both I did have to buy a new split ring to hold roller on It took all of about 45 min to do.
Drum support roller wore out and had to be replaced
Unplugged dryer, turned gas off, removed top, front and bottom front panels, lifted drum and supported, removed old roller, installed new roller, reinstalled panels.
Took the dryer apart, replace parts....put back together....all is well...until I tried to put the belt back on and broke the belt tensioner. Had to put a rush on that order

Read more*** at this point the drum is exposed ***** 6-reached under the drum pulled the tensioner to relieve tension on belt, then dismounted the belt from only the tensioner and motor shaft; leave the belt on the drum! 7-pull drum toward you and forward about 3-to-4 inches, this exposes the drum rollers. 8-use a screwdriver and pry-off the retaining clip on the end of the roller's shaft and remove the roller. 9-remove the roller support-(2)-8mm screws 10- reinstall new roller support 11- apply a light coat of disc-brake hi-temp wheel bearing grease to the roller support shaft, very light! 12-install a new wavy thrust washer, new roller(note they will say "front" on the side that should face you. Don't mount it backwards! 13-install the outer thrust washer and the new retaining clip; use a flashlight for this part! 14-repeat for the other drum roller. **** while you have it apart use a vacuum to remove lint from every where you see it; it is a fire hazard! **** if you think you need a drive belt now is the best time to change it ***** 15- re-assemble the dryer in the reverse order, don't forget to re-install the drive belt and be careful not to pinch the door switch wires. 16-re-plug the drier and test

I pretty much followed a lot of the earlier postings on partselect.com that provided encouragement to pursue replacing this part on my 17 year old dryer (sorry, money is tight these days and I prefer repair to $800 replacement).

I erred though in a couple of places during the replacement. Disassembly took about 20 minutes. However, when I re-assembled I had mistakenly already put the roller onto the shaft before trying to put the drum back in. That isn't possible so I had to remove (an initial groan but only a few extra minutes in the end) the roller from the shaft, then reposition the drum and then the roller back on the shaft.
I also decided to replace the belt while I was in there and I should have taken a picture or made a drawing of the belt route before I took it off since I was later left pondering how the heck to snake the belt onto the shaft and also the tensioner. A quick trip to the internet though showed me a similar route and reminded me how to route it.
I'd also like to add to be cognizant of the wires on the door and front panel when disassembling.
Anyone with any sense of mechanical ability and a little common sense ought to be able to do this repiar.
Pulled off the lower panel with 5/16 socket.Pulled off the door assembly by removing the two screws at the bottom of the door assembly. I pulled down a little and then out. be carefull of the wires. ... Read more screws that hold the front piece in.pulled it off replaced brackets , installed self adhesive felt(stuck good) and then glides. Mine were thin but not the problem. I then reached under the drum and released the belt from the tensioner. I then pulled the whole drum out.This is the time to vacum out good. I could get to the rear rollers very easy. The left roller was shot and the shaft half wore into(the problem). I pulled off the two screws holding the roller support. Normally You have to remove the wheel with snap ring pliers first to remove the support. In this case snap ring long gone. Replaced support shaft, installed thrust washers and roller with grease for both sides. The right support shaft was still good. Removed tensioner pulley and inspected. It was just as good as the new one. Cleaned and greased and reinstalled. Put new belt on the tub and slid it back in. Be carefull to get the belt on the proper side of the tensioner. I then installed the front supprt in place to support the tub with the 4 screws. Spun the tub(felt good) then reached under and reinstalled belt to motor and tensioner. Spun again to check for belt alignment. (Check) Reinstalled door an lower panel. Test Quiet Sounds like new. Very easy! I hope this helps someone just as the other post has helped me. I followed the instructions found on this site. The hardest part was figuring out how to release the clamps at the front of the dryer so I could remove the top.

The rest was easy by following the steps already listed on this site and removing the two front pieces, then the drum and replacing the parts. Putting it back together was simple since I placed things in order and had taken pictures with my cell phone as I went through the process.
The time I took, included vacuuming the inside of the dryer thoroughly. Now it runs like new.

Read more still looked new.always unplug the dryer first. then use a flat balde screwdriver and put in between dryer top and dryer body a couple of inches from either side of the dryer, do one side at a time and slightly rotate screwdiver this will disconnect clips holding top of dryer on. once the clips are free lift dryer top like a car hood and let lid rest back against a wall behind dryer. draw a diagram of wire connections as you go this will make reassembly easy. disconnect the two wires attached to the door latch, then on the right side and left side of the dryer about two inches from the top there is a self tapping bolt that needs to be removed. once the bolts are out you will be able to lift and pullback on the front of the dryer to remove. three philips screws hold the lint trap assembly to the door assembly i took these out and vacuumed everywhere i could. there is a plastic assembly on the front of the heater unit, three small bolts will remove this. draw a diagram of the wires attached to the blower unit and disconnect. reach behind the blower unit release the tension on the belt by pulling the tensioner puilley forward, you will then with the other hand be able to remove the belt. with the belt removed, 4 bolts around the frame of the drum will enable you to remove the drum making all the repairs very easy. you will see both black rollers in the back bottom of the machine, remove with a set of snap ring pliers and replace the same way-make sure the side that says "front" is facing you when you install. the tensioner pulley with bearing is also replaced with a single snap ring, all three can be replaced in minutes. the slides are plastic pieces that are mounted on the inside of the front panel of the dryer that the drum rolls on. the old ones just slide out and the new ones slide in as long as the brackets are still good, no tools required. put everything together in reverse order, getting the drum back in and the belt back on my require an extra set of hands, but is not hard. dryer sounds new, saved myself hundredss of dollars, i'm sure and once i diagnosed the problem and had the parts, repairs were made inside of an hour.

Does this assembly come with the roller? If not i will need two rollers and two shaft assemblies?

Hello Mac, thank you for your question. The Drum Support Roller and shaft assembly does not come with the Roller itself. This is just the shaft and bracket. You would want to order 2 of the Drum Support Roller and Shaft Assembly part number WP40113601 and then two of Drum Support Roller part nmber WP37001042. Good luck with your repair!

Intermittent noisy squeaking sound when i first turn it on. What part do you recommend? Will the roller assembly fix this problem?

Thank you for your question. If the dryer is noisy when you first turn it on, there are some parts that you will need to check to see which one is causing the issue. You will need to check the drum support roller, the belt, the drum glides, the idler level, the thrust washer, the shaft assembly, the retaining ring, the cylinder felt seal, the single drum glide felt pad, the cylinder glide bracket, the blower wheel and the motor.
