The dryer wouldn't start on a regular basis.

I first unplugged the dryer from the wall socket. Then I removed the timer knob by first folding back the rubbery edge with my finger and then popping out the metalic center piece with a flat screwdriver. To remove the knob itself I used needle nose plyers (although just any two pointy objects like pens would work) and pushed the center clip together which releases the knob from the part to be replaced. This clip is the area that sticks out on the new part and reaches from inside the back of the panel to the knob on the front. The circular covering/skirt piece below this just lifted out. I then removed the three screws from the top back of the control panel of the dryer and tilted the panel forward to access the inside. The part being replaced is held in place in three areas. Push down on the plastic piece to then allow the part to be slid to the left and out from under the two other pieces holding it in place. Unplug the wiring by releasing the black housing/socket by lifting it over the plastic lip holding it in place with the assistance of a screwdriver. Mine was really hard to detach but eventually it came off. Don't pull on the individual wires.
Attach the new part to the wires and install it by doing the reverse of the instructions used to get the old one out.
I'm a housewife in my mid 40's with NO experience with this sort of thing. This was really easy and the dryer starts every time now!

Timer would not allow the dryer to be started.

I had to remove the timer knob and the front of the dryer control panel. Once inside, there was only one plug. I unplugged the original timer and replaced it with the new timer. I replaced the plug, slide the timer back into place. I then closed the front of the control panel and replaced the timer knob. Once that was done, voila the job was complete.

Drying timer won't advance

Remove the timer control knob cap with a small flat head screw driver on either side of the cap, between the cap and the rubber ring (this took a while to figure out, but it's easy once you do) then remove the knob. Remove 3 T15 hex screws on top of control panel, tilt top of panel toward you and lift up. Remove the electrical connector (this was difficult, you have to release the lock and rock the connector at the same time). Push down on the locking tabs at the feet of the timer assembly and slide to remove. Reverse these directions to install new timer. Unfortunately this did not fix my problem because the timer still won't advance. I'm replacing the sensor assembly next. I'll let you know if that works.

Broken plastic twirl knob shaft on timer assembly and chrome timer cap

0. Disconnected the dryer power supply
1. Removed the control panel (3 screws, star bit)
2. Detached the electric power supply cords from the timer assembly (took a bit of easing back and forth - do not pull by the electric cords, pull the socket itself)
3. Timer assembly eased off subsequently (held in place by three unscrewed receptacles)
4. Installed the new timer assembly, plugged back the supply cords, and installed the new timer knob, skirt and chrome cap.

They don't build Maytag equipment as they used to. We bought a fridge, washer and dryer 6 years ago - all three of them have had component, part stress and/or electronic sensor failures :-(

Dryer timer has broken gears.

My dryer timer's internal gears were broken. Timer Cap also was broken. I opened the front face plate by removing the three screws on top and disconnecting the wiring harness. Took me 10 minutes to replace. I do very very little shopping online, I am VERY impressed with the availability of parts from partselect and am also impressed with the shipping turnaround. I thought I needed a timer knob but then realized I didn't need it and canceled the order, and I was refunded in two days. I am so happy with the way the process went I wish partselect dealt with other products besides appliances.
