Fridge would make loud humming sound and then give distinct 'click' when whatever it was trying to do didn't work.
Easily replaced the 2 parts after removing panel in back of fridge. Very easy and did the trick!

Compressor failing to start, repeated buzzing sound
pull out the fridge, unplug. remove 4 screws to remove the black panel covering the compressor area (remember to unhook the power cord off of it). locate the capacitor/relay switch which is on the left side of the compressor. There is a wire hook that holds the capacitor in place. unhook the wire, then pry loose the relay and capacitor off. then unhook the wire connector (there's a latch you'll have to press or pull up to loosen the connector). put the new capacitor on the new relay, put the wire connector on the new relay, then plug it back into the compressor. one securely plugged in, put the wire hook back on.
hook the power cord back on the black rear panel, screw it back onto the fridge.
I think the hardest part of all this for me was trying to pull the refrigerator out of the cabinet. once I got access to the rear of the fridge, it was very straightforward.

Freezer too warm(everything melted), refrigerator too warm
Using socket wrench, took bottom right panel off on back side of refrigerator to expose compressor. It was very hot to touch, with no noise, signifying it wasn't working. It was a Tecumseh, TP142ar229b8. Evidently from internet search this is not a good brand. Turned off power at circuit box. Removed metal spring clip holding on white relay. Took off capacitor (black square piece) attached to relay. It was okay as I measured 15uF with multimeter. Disconnected electric cables to white relay by pulling off connector. Took off white relay with long cylindrical protrusion from compressor by pulling it straight off. Shook relay - pieces of ceramic fell out, indicating it was bad. Ordered and received new one (next day). Attached new relay to existing compressor by pushing it on. Replaced capacitor and electrical cables by pushing on. Replaced spring clip. Turned on power and compressor was working. Replaced bottom back panel.

Compressor stopped running
I opened up the back panel, and with a multimeter found that the compressor was not getting power. The voltage stopped at the connection socket and run capacitor. Unplugged the fridge and discharged the capacitor, CAREFULLY removed these parts and replaced them. Fridge works now. The repair guy gave me an estimate of $900, but with partselect, I fixed my fridge for $63 including overnight shipping.
Remember to unplug the fridge before removing the back panel, and vacuum any dust and dirt before you work. The power to the compressor is at WALL OUTLET LEVELS and can cause serious injury or death. Please be careful and wear proper protective equipment. The repair may extremely simple, but that does not mean you should be careless.

Refrigerator no longer cooled
The 5 year Kenmore Elite (Amana made) french-door fridge stopped cooling - fan did run although compressor didn't. I first took out the thermostat and tested with OHM meter as I looked up on the internet. Tested fine. Then I took off the back cover to expose the compressor. Pulled off relay/capacitor and instantly heard the relay rattling and knew that was it. Ordered the part and that was it - real simple to install. I realized how simple a refrigerator is and how few parts (that are worth fixing) would really go bad on these generally very reliable appliances.

Refrigerator stopped working
Remove lower rear panel. Relay and capacitor are readily accessible. Remove retaining clip and electrical plug from assembly. Unplug from side of tank and unplug capacitor from relay and replace.

Compressor would not start
THE RELAY/OVERLOAD RATTLED WHEN REMOVED FROM THE COMPRESSOR.I USED AN OHM METER TO CHECK THE COMP AND CAPACITOR. I CLEANED THE VERY DIRTY CONDENSER WHICH PROBABLY CAUSED THE FAILURE. I ORDERED THE RELAY AT NOON AND IT WAS AT MY FRONT DOOR AT 11:00AM THE NEXT MORNING.

Refrigerator and freezer stopped cooling
Disconnected the old part and reconnected the new part. We only needed tools to remove the panel on the outside of the refrigerator to get to the part. Since we ordered the part to fix the refrigerator, we replaced the refrigerator door bins that had cracked.

Took off small back panel of fridge and removed old part and installed new. Never worked on a fridge before. Part less expensive then other sites and cheaper buying locally would take 7 to 10 days. Part Select was overnight and cheaper than buying part here in Memphis.
