The cooktop glass had been broken.
First , I unplugged the stove from the wall !!! Then Removed 2 screws attaching the top to the stove frame , then removed 6 screws from back side to un-do the hinges from both sides to allow cooktop to come forward. Unscrewed 4 screws that held the elements to the 'broken' cooktop glass and everthing was free. No disconnection of the wiring was needed..
Reattached the element brackets to the new glass, put the hinges back in place and laid cooktop down onto stove frame for the last 2 screws to be put on. It worked fine when I re-plugged the stove unit back in ..
