Kitchen Aide mixer repair of worm follower gear.
Fix was easy. Mixer comes apart by removal of 5 screws. Grease cover the same. Circuit board is off to the side. Took a bit of effort to remove old grease. Had to buy a retaining ring pliers and took a little effort to remove.
I probably stripped some teeth from the old worm gear by kneading bread dough at too high a setting. Manual states to knead bread dough at 2.
Replaced old gear, reassembled, and applied new grease. Then tested on pizza dough. Worked fine and dough does not require a speed greater than 2.
Several good YouTube videos on replacing worn gears. So for about $40 now have a working mixer and a new retaining pliers.

The part was exactly the part I needed. I also needed to purchase cooking grade grease for the gear box but that was not a recommendation when purchasing the new gear. I learned from another website that when a gear goes bad that all of the grease should be removed because of metal shavings having compromised or contaminated the original grease. If not changed the metal in the grease would cause premature wear to the new gear. I had to get the grease from another supplier which took an additional 5 days to get delivered. The best solution is to have the grease show as a commonly purchased item with the gear.

Gears stripped

Watched several videos on repair. Noted part placement while disassembling. Found problem, ordered and received parts. Cleaned out all old grease. Greased all parts and reassembled per recommendations, paying attention to the bearing race and washer placement. Firmly tensioned all fasteners, cleaned up and tested.
Removed 2 screws holding the switch unplugged the one at a time. opened the gear box cover 4 Philip screws, cleaned out the grease removed the pinion gear, removed pin, removed the planet gear assembly replaced gears in reversed order greased it up put gear cover back on and tested worked great.

Took it apart, found stripped gears, a common problem. Reviewed parts diagram on your website. Got the parts, reviewed the diagram, removed defective parts, used retaining ring pliers. put it back together, put new grease in, tried it out. Very easy fix
Replaced the worm gears. Original were ground down as if they were not seated correctly. Ordered the parts and swapped them out. I do not own a retaining clip removal tool. This was the most difficult, trying to open the clip using 2 needle nose pliers. It made the repair time longer.
I have replaced so much on this mixer I can take it apart in my sleep. # speed controllers and now 2 gears. just wish we still had the 40 year old mixer we had, never half as many problems. New are not made like the old.

My mixer is hit and miss with the planetary moving the whisk etc. It stops working with a heavy load such as kneading bread dough. It is working with nothing to mix right now. I think it is the worm gear. I need to get a replacement to fix it.
