Spark Module WPW10331686

The part was great. My model Kitchenaid range is a bizarre one: if something boils over on the large burner, it can drip directly onto the spark module and short it out. This happens if the volume is more than about 1/4 cup, so it spills out from the burner. There are two small holes in the pan right under the large burner, the spark module sits right below these. To access the spark module the top of the range needs to be taken off (some models it is on the side or the back).

I put this replacement part in my Kitchenaid freestanding range, Model KGSS907SSS00. It was needed because I was boiling some pasta in a saucepan on the extra-hot, left-front burner. I stepped away for about a minute to sign for a package being delivered. When I returned, the water had boiled over, spilling about 3 oz. of the liquid onto the burner, which doused the flames. Instinctively, I turned the knob back to the "Light" position to re-ignite the flame. However, unknown to me, some of the spilled water had found its way onto the Spark Module circuit board, which caused it to short out some component(s) as soon as I activated it by turning the knob. It was rather shocking to discover, after taking off the "dashboard" (that part right behind the burner control knobs, also containing the LED display), that not only was the spark module mounted precisely below that burner, but also that there is a (purposeless) ¼" hole in the metal top chassis ( PS985886), perfectly situated right over the spark module, so that any boil-over occurring on that left-front burner would be able to result in the consumer paying for a very expensive repair. I'm a DIY sort of guy, so I got away with a mere $242 replacement part (2018 prices), but if I'd had to call an appliance repair tech. the bill for allowing that boil-over would easily have been in excess of $500. The repair itself is actually quite simple, and requires only a (Phillips) screwdriver plus this new spark module. Begin by turning off electric power serving the range, then pulling off all 4 knobs. The control panel (PS11748501) is attached by just two screws, located on the lower left and right corners, more or less in the space just above the closed oven door. The control panel is held in place by resting on two, protruding pins (one on the left side, the other on the right), plus those two screws on the lower corners. When you remove both those screws, the control panel will be able to be pulled up and away from the range, although not too far, because there are two, green grounding wires screwed into it on the back side. By leaning into the loosen control panel while also resting it on the top of the oven door, you should be able to unscrew both of those grounding terminals. Now you can set the control panel aside. Looking in the space between the oven top and the cooktop, you'll notice two circuit boards. The left one, right below the left-front double burner head, is the spark module... held in by just one sheet metal screw on the lower right. After removing that one screw you will be able to slide the dead spark module out and slide in the new one. It's that simple. Everything will go back together in reverse order, and you'll be back to cooking in no time. Bet you'll watch boiling water more closely from now on ;-)

It came in... was installed for a week, now it is back to no heat in oven or broiler. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!
