This is a dishwasher wax motor actuator that opens the dispenser cover to dispense dishwashing detergent and rinse aid during the wash cycle in your dishwasher. This is an authentic OEM part from the genuine manufacturer. It is a little over 2 inches long, and mostly red in colour. Disconnect power from your appliance because electrical wires will be exposed during repair. The wax motor is held in place by two tabs for easy release. Once you have gained access to the actuator, simply separate the two tabs and replace the part. This part is sold separately.
This part works with the following brands: Whirlpool, Admiral, Estate, Inglis, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Roper, Maytag, Crosley, Jenn-Air, Hardwick, Magic Chef, Amana, Caloric & Glenwood.

I didn't know exactly what was wrong, so I ordered 5 differnt parts. I probably only needed the wax motor, but I thought I might as well change some of the other parts while I had the door lining opened, which was easy with a socket set to remove the Torx screws. The hardest part was getting the old detergent cup lid off. Replacing the motor took 30 seconds! I didn't replace the latch after all, because it looked fine. The parts costs $38. Your web site is great and reading other's comments gave me the confidence to do my own job. Thank you so much!

My husband thinks I'm the smartest wife ever! He's telling all his friends how I got online to research the problem (thanks to your readers and DIY comments!), diagnosed it, ordered the parts and - voila - clean dishes once again! It's like everyone said, remove inside of the door by removing 7 torx screws, dismantle wiring -remember to note what connects to what - pop out old parts, easily insert new ones (that arrived in record time!), reconnect wiring, replace door and you're done. Replacing the reservoir o-ring also stopped the leaking problem that preceded the door issue. Thanks PartSelect!
Since I did not orig. order a fill valve I bought one locally(at twice your price) and after installing it the dishwasher worked. I then continued to install the pump motor housing and the wax motor for the soap dispenser.The dishwasher now works great, is quiet, the dishes are clean and sanitized.
First I removed door liner with Torx driver. Then I cleaned out the dispenser mechanism. I found that the waxmotor snapped out. I disconnected the two wires and reattached the new motor. I then snapped the motor back in place. Worked like a charm.
Repair was simple and effective. Took out 7 torx screws, and then pulled the wax motor out of its holders. Pulled 2 wires off, remembering which went where, and replaced old motor with new motor. Reattached wires, put screws back in, and it works great again! The other reviews were very helpful!
I used a voltmeter to see if 120 volts was present at the right time in the cycle; it was, so the actuator was the likely culprit. I ordered one on a Monday afternoon about 2:30, and it appeared on my doorstep Tuesday, shortly after noon! It took less than 15 minutes to replace the actuator - removing the 7 Phillips-head screws, lifting the panel, popping out the upper actuator, removing the two wires, putting them on the new actuator, popping it in and putting the panel back on. Worked like a charm. Happy wife . . .
Replaced wax motor. Since the latch grommet seal was nearby I replaced that also. That seal can cause significant door leaks and I had replaced it 5 years ago. It is easier to take the entire assembly off of the door and clean it. Be careful not to break the plastic linkages. To test the repair, you must let the dishwasher go through the entire wash cycle. Simply advancing the timer won't test it as the motor takes 1-2 minutes to fully extend and open the door. The door opens on fill number 3 of 4.

I removed the inside panel and discovered the actuator was caked with detergent and was not working. I replaced the cover and ordered a new motor. The new actuator arrived about a week later and I installed it in about two minutes. No more problems.
I ordered the Wax Motor for the Detergent Cup. The install was simple. Unscrew about 7 or so torx screws and the lid opens up. Do not pull it off as it is attached to another device with wires. With the door laying down (fully open) there is enough room to pull the plastic door. The wax motor comes out when you bend two plastic built in clips. There are two wires attached. Remove them one by one and put them on the new wax motor while it is aligned in the same direction. Once the two wires are reinstalled, pop the motor back in it and make sure it is securely in place. Align the plastic inner portion of the door and screw the seven or so torx screws back in. Simple as that!
As others here had described the repair as Really Easy, I decided to try it. Using a torx screwdriver, I removed the screws holding the inside door panel to get to the wax motor. The wax motor was held in place with a plastic clip and attached to the electrical connection with clips. Removal was a snap, as was putting in the new one. Noted that the rinse agent dispenser uses another identical wax motor. I had purchased the spring just in case but did not need to replace it. Reattached the panel and everything works just great !
I removed six screws from the inside of the door panel and lifted up the panel to access the Wax Motor. I disconnected the two wires from the bottom of the motor and unclipped the motor from the panel. I reconnected the two wires to the new motor, installed the new motor, which just clips into place. I Reattached the door panel using the six screws. Everything is working fine again.

The repair was not successful. Once the dishwash door panels were removed (quite easy), I found that instead of separate wax motors for the detergent and "sparkling" liquid dispensers, the KitchenAid "Whisper" Quiet Ultima model has a sealed unit with all the motors inside. Repair would require the replacement of the sealed dispenser unit ($168). Hence, the wax motors in their original seal packaging were returned to the PartSelect warehouse.
removed the screws on the door cover on the inside. removed the cover. unhooked the wires to the motor, removed the motor and replaced with the new motor and connected the wires. Placed the cover back on and put in the screws. The detergent cup now works.
