A small coin had entered the impeller and the blades ground off against it.
The rear access is attached with 2 Phillips head screws, which I removed. The drain hose is held up with a similar screw. I removed the screw and drained the hose into a bucket. Would the drain pump cause the machine to make a groaning noise during and after the cycle is finished, and cause the control dial to respond erratically when trying to select a new cycle to get the machine to finish and shut off?

Hello Dave, thank you for inquiring. The noise is likely being caused by either a faulty Drain Pump, part number PS11741568, or Shock Damper, part number PS11741561 for your model washer. Regarding the noisy drain pump and control problem: The machine makes a loud groaning noise at end of cycle, like it's straining to drain, but when it finally finishes the cycle and the control says "end" the groaning noise continues. If i shut it off with the 'off' button, and then try to turn the dial to a different cycle, it starts up making the groaning noise again without pressing the dial to start. Trying the 'spin only" option results in the noise again without having to press the control dial to start the machine as is the usual method. After shutting off and retrying a few times it will finally complete enough to remove and dry the load. Would a pump failure cause the control module to get "confused" or is there a problem with the control board as well?

Hello Dave, thank you for writing back. With this new information, a faulty Control Board is a possibility of causing the cycle to not advance. Unfortunately, the replacement for your model washer is discontinued. You will need to reach out to Maytag directly for a substitution part number if it needs to be replaced.
