TDE546RBW1 Tappan Dryer - Instructions

i watched the video that is furnished at parts select, it was very useful in doing this repair. i would strongly recommend watching this as i did install the ground bearing wrong to start with,and restringing the drum belt is something you have to feel as your installing it back in place so the video is useful for that as well. my repair was on a front load dryer made by Frigidaire,

Unplug dryer, remove rear access cover and removed belt from pulley. Remove bottom cover on front of dryer, remove top of dryer, unplug harness to control panel and remove front door assembly. Remove screws from drum to bearing assembly. Removed drum and belt removed bearing assembly by lifting up and out of the bearing socket. Vacuumed all the lint. Removed the bearing socket, installed all parts and covers in reverse order.

I followed instructions I found on u-tube to remove the drum and belt and access the bad bearing and change it. The instructions were quite good other than needing to remove a small panel on the back of the dryer to pull the belt around the tensioner.

DIsassembled the dryer by removing the top piece first. Removed the kick panel and the two screws on the bottom of the front panel. Disconnect the 2 wiring harnesses then remove the remaining 6 screws that you can see from the top. If possible, have someone support the front panel as you undo the last couple screws. Remove the plate on the rear lower right side to expose the pulley and belt. Pull on the tensioner while gently pulling the belt off the pulley and tensioner. Lift the drum up quick and hard to separate the ball shaft from the bearing holder. Remove drum by taking it out through the front opening. Replace the ball shaft on the back of the drum. This is much easier if you have an extra set of hands. At this point, vacuum out as much lint as you can. There is a white container attached to the front panel, vacuum this too. THere was several inches of lint build up that had made it past the screen. Replace the bearing, ball retainer, and ball bearing on the dryer. Grease the ball and retainer and reinstall the drum. SInce I was replacing the bearing, I went ahead and replaced the belt too. Reposition the belt on the pulley and tensioner. Spin it a little to make it is on the right place. Reassemble the dryer. This is the first time that I have done a repair of this sort and it turned out to be a lot easier than I thought. Two people would have made it even easier and faster.

Followed the video, it was good, the instructor's tips were useful and time saving.

My 6 year old son fixed the door handle, and I replaced the belt.

Unplugged dryer power. Pry up the upper cover using a puttyknife along the front left an right corners. Lift cover up and out of the way. Removed the front panel by removing two philips screws, located inside the drum area and pry panel away from unit. Besure to unplug the wires to the door switch before removing the front panel. Know the Drum is exposed. Undo the drum drive belt by reaching in under the drum and pushing the spring loaded idler pulley to the left and remove the belt from the drive motor shaft. Lift the drum straight up, this removes the drum from the rear support bearging. slide the drum out of the unit. Remove rear drum support bearing. and install new brg., being careful not to loose the small ball brearing (thrust Brg.), this proceedure requires two people. Lubricate the support Brg. with a HIGH temp grease. Place new belt on drum and install drum and drive belt reversing the proceedure. Remove old Drum glide and sand paper the old adhesive. Apply adhesive provided liberally to both surfaces, allow adhesive to cure for 10 to 15 min. Allign Drum glide and press and hold in place. Allow adhesive to dry for 2-3 hrs. before installing front panel. Install panel, plugin door wiring close cover. Your Back In Business.....

I suspected a worn belt and that's what it was. I watched 2 videos on belt replacement and it was not a hard fix. The only "problems" I could foresee would be moving the drum around if you are not that strong. Its not terribly heavy, just a little awkward. I also sliced the top of my hand a little on the underside of the cabinet when moving the drum. Being a little more careful that wouldn't have happened. Part plus shipping was less then $20, and we now have a great working dryer again. I also got a zap when I forgot I had plugged it back in and was putting the inside screws back and the screwdriver crossed some wires. Nothing bad, just a quick jolt. Remember to unplug it until you're all done!

The repair was done by my spouse. We replaced the rear drum bearing. We installed with the instructions sent by parts select. They were very accurate. The total repair took about 1 and 1/2 hours that was only because we cleaned out the entire dryer also, by using an air compressor to clean and blow out all the lint built up. This improved drying time and the part stopped the noise. I don't recall exactly what tools were used besides screwdrivers. This was our first time to replace anything in our dryer of 12 years old. I feel that if you follow the instructions that anyone would be able to do this repair. We did the repair in our garage because you need the room to work on it.

First I have to say that this was the fourth appliance repair I've done with Partselect parts. I am very pleased with all parts I've gotten from Partselect. The things I've ordered here are delivered quickly and are correct. Now for the dryer repair. I guess the most important tool I had to complete the job was the excellent video demonstration on the Partselect web site. I found that by following the instructions on the video even I had no problems. I spent more time cleaning the inside of the dryer than I did on installing the rear drum bearing. I probably saved us several hundred dollars by making the repair myself. At first I was intimidated but after I got the top off of the dryer and the front off the repair was simple and straightforward. Total time of repair was about fifteen minutes. Total time spent cleaning the lint and other stuff (I did find two dimes and a penny) was about forty five minutes. One hour total and my wife and I have a dryer which is acting like it did when we purchased it in 2001. Thanks to Partselect. Barry

I highly recommend watching the repair video. I could stop the instructions and do the procedure then resume instructions for the next step. I would recommend you have a second person to help lift the drum up & out of the dryer frame. And ladies please instruct your husbands to watch the video all the way through. Mine lifted the top off the dryer and stuck his hand in and cut his finger immediately on a sharp piece of metal. You know because they don't need to read the instructions.

I watched the video and the instructions were perfect. The only thing I did differently was I had a second person help me to hold the bearing spring and hold the drum knob in place. I also used the rear access panel to disengage and re-engage the belt because I know I am not good at doing things blindly. You will definitely want to pre-thread the knob assembly before you screw it to the drum. Glad the kit included a bearing because the old one was completely gone. It took me so long because I took the opportunity to vacuum 10 plus years of lint and I was using it as a teaching opportunity. If I have to replace the heating element I think it will be much faster.

I watched the great easy to follow video from PartSelect. Absolutely nothing unclear. I was able to open the top and disconnect the front panel in less than 10 minutes! Removed the old felt drum glide, scraped off any stuck felt and loose glue. Then glued the new pad in place, using 3 small clamps, like clothes pins. Let it set for about 15 minutes then put it all back together! I did forget to reattach the ground wire, so I had to open the lid back up for that. About 50 minutes total. Also I took the opportunity of having the front panel off to give the inside a good vacuuming, not a ton of lint but enough to go ahead and clean it out! Thanks for the help!

Popped top off with flat head, took 2 screws out with phillips head, disconnected wiring, took front off, old piece removed, cleaned with razor blade, installed new glide, all done. I am sorry I waited so long to try this. So easy!

It was super easy! I followed the PartSelect video and everything went fine. Getting the drum out of the machine was a bit tricky but once it was out, the rear bearing kit went in without any problems.
