Broken actuator-water

  • Customer: Wesley from New Smyrna Beach FL
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Time to Complete: 15 - 30 mins
  • Tools Required: Screw drivers

Easy repair, except the re-install of the entire water/ice part back into the door. The original plastic water line too short to fit back into the small opening. Hint: Go buy 10 inch of new water line and a small connector. Run the new line up through the small opening, and connect to the original water line with the small connector. This made it easy to replace and test, and then cut of the excess water line.
Thanks.

Original gate broke at the swivel point

  • Customer: Charles from New Orleans LA
  • Difficulty: A Bit Difficult
  • Time to Complete: 15 - 30 mins
  • Tools Required: Screw drivers, Socket set

I removed the old gate by using a flat head screw driver to pry open mouth. I then removed 2 bolts that held on the cage that hols the ice crushing blades. Then I inserted the new gate and used a screw driver to pry the mouth open again (it was more difficult to insert than remove). I then popped in the new gate and re-assembled the cage. It worked on the first shot with no problems!

This is the 3rd time I have attemped and successfully repaired major home appliances myself after the warrenty ran out. I'm sure I could buy a new appliance for the money I saved.

Tried replacing water filter first. It stilled leaked, so I removed the covers to gain access to the water filter base. After cutting the two hoses to remove the old base, I simply slid the hoses into the new base, screwed it into place, replaced the covers, and then reinstalled the new water filter. No more leak!

Fridge side too cold

Most of the time was spent removing frozen food and removing the plastic clip holding one of the shelves in place. Removal of bottom panel took less than a minute. Thermostat easy to find, clipped wires a the unit and removed unit. Used included wire jackets, but not white shrink wrap. This did NOT fix the problem. This was the attempt at a 'cheap' fix. My refrigerator required the 'control box' to be replaced.

There was a horrendous popping noise when I opened the refrigerator door.

  • Customer: Weston from Anchorage AK
  • Difficulty: Really easy

  • Tools Required: Pliers, Screw drivers

First I cleaned out the side door then, removed the three screws on top of the door. Lifted the door off and set it carefully on a kitchen mat.

I had to use the pliers to remove the existing bearing hinge as it had disintegrated in the door. Once it was out the new hinge slid right into place and I reinstalled the door. I had help with the door. It’s much easier with two people to get proper alignment and to hold it in place while you reattach the screws.

I would have to say the hardest part of this repair was cleaning out the refrigerator.

It saved me hundreds of dollars. We considered buying a new fridge but not anymore. , it only cost me $70 including shipment charges. Remove power from refrigerator. Pull out the drip tray below paddle. Removed the 3 screws behind tray. Gently pull control panel out and remove the ribbon cable plug from panel. Set panel aside. Remove three screws holding panel housing to door, then pull out housing slightly and disconnect harness plug behind left side of housing. Pull housing out 3-4 inches. Look at the way paddle tabs engage ice dispenser switch mechanism. Remove the left paddle hinge screw and plate and loosen the right hinge screws(these also hold the water paddle hinge) Remove broken paddle by pulling out from right hinge plate and down. Install new paddle under right hinge plate, engage new paddle tabs correctly onto dispenser switch, install left hinge plate and screw, then tighten hinge screws. Reconnect harness plug, reinstall 3 housing to door screws, reconnect ribbon plug to control panel and reinstall panel screws. Reinstall drip tray. Reconnect power to refrigerator and check operation of ice and water paddles.

A plastic guide rail broke after the meat keeper drawer was left open and the refrigerator door was shut on the drawer, this has happened a few times over the last 6 years. We chose to change out both rails at the same time. We removed the meatkeeper drawer, then the shelf above as the rails are attached to the shelf. We removed the rails (one screw on each side. When the new rails came in, we replaced them with the screws. Super easy!
