Our built in 24 3/4 w x 14 1/2 h Dacor stopped heating this morning. It hums louder, and the turntable turns. Is this something fixable or is it “cooked”?

Hi Brooke, Thank you for your question. If the microwave is not heating and you are hearing a humming noise the issue is likely the magnetron. The magnetron generates heat for the microwave and if it is malfunctioning it can cause the humming noise that you are hearing. Another part you will need to check is the high voltage diode. These parts are high voltage parts and before you remove them from the microwave, you will need to remove the dangerous charge from the capacitor. To discharge the capacitor, use an insulated pair of needle nose pliers to touch both terminals simultaneously. Be careful not to touch the metal portion of the tool. Once you have done this and removed the parts from the microwave, you will need to test the parts with a multi-meter. For the magnetron, place the multi-meter on the Rx1 setting and touch the probes to the terminals. This should produce a reading of two to three ohms of resistance. Next, move one probe to touch the metal housing of the magnetron. This test should not indicate that continuity is present. If the results of your test do not match the results above, you will need a replacement magnetron. To test the diode, you will also need to set your multi-meter to the Rx1 setting and touch the probes to the terminals. Next, reverse the probes to check for continuity in the other direction. You should receive a reading that shows continuity in one direction, but not the other direction. If your diode does not show continuity, or shows continuity in both directions, you will need a replacement high voltage diode. If you are not familiar with how to use a multi-meter, here is a link to a video that will show you how to use one, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWC44fHn0As. We hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day.
