I inserted a metal rod in the bottom of the base while I held it sideways to keep the motor from turning and I used pliers to twist the coupling off counterclockwise.
I thought at first I was doing it wrong because it wouldn't nudge so I left it alone. I then read the repair stories again and went back to it and it right came off. I guess there was a lot of gunk holding it tight.
Of course when the new one came days later it was easy to twist it on. Thank you for all of your stories. They were very informative and encouraging. Without them I'm not sure if I would have attempted it myself.
