The old knob must have lost some teeth, and when it was pulled out to start the washer, instead, it came right off. Looking at the helpful diagrams on, I quickly figured out what part I needed to order. It arrived within two days! I took off what was left of the old knob by twisting it counterclockwise, basically unscrewing it, as it is held on by a long threaded bolt. The new knob went on by simply screwing it into place until it started to catch ,and turned the entire dial . It was incredibly easy.
