Product Description

Door Key Specifications

The microwave door key (or door latch) ensures that the microwave door closes properly while the microwave is operating. If the door key is broken, the door will not close and the microwave will not start. If you notice that the microwave door is not staying closed, check to ensure that the door key is in working order and is not damaged. This door key is made of plastic and has a spring attached to provide downward tension to keep the hooks engaged. If either of the hooks is broken or does not have any spring tension, you may need to replace the door latch. Before beginning this repair, make sure to unplug the unit and remove the inner door panel to access the door key. This part is also known as a door latch.

The plastic door key (latch) broke where the spring attaches.
I took off the inner plastic frame of the door, removed the broken part, hooked the spring up to the new latch and replaced it into the proper alignment holes, and works perfectly. It was less than a 5 minute repair.

Replacing microwave door handle and lock hingr spring
Take a decent putty knife or your handy kitchen spatular. Open microwave door and out the outside edge of the dark plastic trim panel, insert the spatula or putty knife and gently pop the panel loose from the small retaining clips. You must do this from the outside edge as that is where the trim panel will release from. Remove the trim panel. Using a flashlight, inspect the metal door frame and find the two Phillips screws holding on the door handle. Unscrew and remove door handle. Lift up on the door latch mechanism, its black plastic and has two legs that slide into the door frame. Between the two plastic poles (legs) you will find the spring, unhook if not broken from the middle of the plastic bracket. You will notice that the metal door frame has three holes. The top and bottom are for the latch mechanism to slide through. The middle is for the spring to latch into (rear or side closest to outside of the door), with the round area which is open, is there for the spring to slide into. Manually slide the door latch up and down. Replace the screws for the door handle if not already done. And reinstall the black plastic inside door trim panel gently pushing into place so that the mounting tabs click into place. Tell your wife you spent all day doing it (its about a 20 minute job) and that you saved thousands of dollars :). Insert popcorn and turn on a movie.

Microwave door did not close
Initially I called a Samsung recommended appliance repair outfit to fix the latch. The technician informed me that he does not fix latches. I need to buy a full new door for the microwave for $215 plus he charges $165 to come to my house. I got angry and did some research and it turned out that this is a very common problem. I ordered part PS4229162 "door key" $6.67 then followed the instructions on a youtube video by zimsjeep
"Repair a Broken Microwave Door Latch" to install. At first I struggled a bit hooking up the spring to the frame, but then I used a slim plier to hold the spring (instead of my fingers) and that did the trick.

How do i put this on my appliance
For model number SMH1713S

Hi Roseann, This a fairly easy job to do. You will need to take the screen on the inside of the door with either a butter knife or a flat head screw driver. Use one of these to pop the screen off. Don't use too much force or you will break it. This should pop off easily for you. There is a spring that attaches to the door key to the door. Remove both the spring and the current door key from the channel. What keeps the door key in place is tension. Towards the bottom of the door where the key would slide into there are what looks like hooks. Slide the key into the channel and attach the spring to the door key. Attach the spring to the bottom hook to provide tension to the key so it stays in place. Place the screen back on the door and you are done. I hope this helps with your repair. Thank you and have a great day!

Microwave door does not close. I opened it up to see that the door key that holds the spring to hooks is broken. Hooks and spring are perfect. I tried to glue the key to its broken base. It worked for a day, but then again it broke. Does the part come with new door key? I only see hook in picture. Please help.

I removed the door key as suggested and found the spring had slipped off the door, not the key. I replaced it and it seems to now have plenty of tension and it does, in fact, now hold the door closed. However, the closure hooks on the key do not seem to be tightly seated enough in the latch holes to activate the microwave and enable it to run through a heating cycle. Almost tight enough, but not quite! Any ideas?

Hi Mike, Thank you for your question. Here is some installation information that may help you. Before you begin any repair please unplug the appliance from the electrical outlet. You will need to remove the plastic lining around the inside of the door. There are retainer clips holding the liner in place and you will need to use a putty knife to remove it. Depending on the type of microwave you have, you may have to come in from the bottom or from the top to remove the lining. Gently slide the putty knife in between the lining and the frame and go around the frame and gently pry it loose. On the hinge side you will need to come in from the backside to pry the lining off. The door latch is held in place by tension. There is a spring that is usually attached to the latch and to one of the fins on the door to provide it. With the inner lining removed you can now remove the old latch. Install the new latch by slipping it into the slots in the door and attach the spring to the bottom fin to allow for tension in the latch. Reinstall the lining and close the door. Plug the microwave back in. I hope this helps. Thank you and have a great day!

Why does this part not come with the spring?
For model number 40185042210

Hello Brigid, Thank you for the question. The Door Key Hook and Spring are two separate parts so Kenmore sells them sepratley. Since we are required to buy them as separate parts from Kenmore we are required to sell them separate as well. Hope this helps!
