The original idler assembly was an inferior part. Instead of a wheel, it simply had a nylon strip attached to the arm. The belt rode against the strip and eventually wore it out. When the belt began running against the metal, it would not longer move causing the motor to eventually destroy the belt. Access to the idler assembly and belt is from the front of the machine. First remove the two small screws from under the door to the lint filter. Lift the top of the machine and tilt back. You have to move the top slightly forward from the base in order to lift it. Unplug the door switch. Remove the two screws (one on each side) that hold the front of the machine to it's sides. Lift up slightly on the front of the machine to disconnect it from the bottom. Move the front of the machine out of the way. The drum will drop down, but will not fall out. The idler is underneath the drum. It is not held by screws. It is simply a curved spring with the idler wheel attached. Bend it down to loosen the belt. Remove the belt from the idler and the idler from the base making note of how the belt runs through the idler. Replace the belt making sure the grooved side of the belt runs against the drum. Install the idler into the slots in the base of the machine. Fit the drum back into the back of the machine making sure the gasket does not get folded. Install the belt through the idler by bending the idler down to relieve the tension on the belt. If the idler and belt are properly installed, when you release the idler it will put tension on the belt. Re-install the front and top. Make sure you plug in the door switch before attaching the top. Warning: there is a lot of sharp metal inside a dryer. Be careful working around it.
