With the help of a tech via the JustAnswer chat room, started with the obvious of checking the heat coil and with his instructions stepping through possibilities, was able to diagnose the problem of the timer from finding a couple of fried wires at their connections to the timer. Looking close showed the timer had overheated and was probably fused inside. Ordered the part on Saturday. It was delivered on Tuesday. Took about 15 minutes to install. More time was spent cleaning the lint out of the internals inside the cabinet and control panel than the actual repair.
