Maytag Performa Dryer purchased in 1997 with terrible noise coming from bottom right portion of the dryer. Unplugged the dryer, removed the dryer hose and pulled the dryer away from the wall. Removed the screws along the sides of the dryer, lifted the top of the dryer (it's on hinges) and removed remaining screws holding the dryer front. Unclipped the dryer door light toggle switch and removed front of dryer. Determined the cause to be the plastic wheel at the front was broken and spinning freely. Ordered a new wheel and belt for the dryer. Removed screws holding the guard plate for the wheel and replaced. The holding ring/clip was a little difficult to remove and put back on. The new wheel fits much more snug on the axle, but must be pushed back to the mark of the original wheel. I placed a spark-plug socket over the axle and tapped it gently with a hammer to move the wheel back to position and then replaced the ring/clip. Replacing the dryer belt required removing the drum. Be sure to look at how the current belt threads through the wheels before removing the drum and belt. Wrap the belt around the drum, replace the drum and rethread the belt. Clean/vacuum the lint inside the unit. Replace the blow wheel guard. Put the dryer front back on and reclip the door light toggle switch. Close the top, reconnect the dryer hose and plug back in. Took about an hour to repair once the problem was identified.
